After a week

The air was electric with excitement at the Salvatore Boarding School as we approached the annual Miss Mystic Falls pageant. It’s a tradition that’s become a cornerstone of our school year, celebrating not just beauty and grace, but also the unique qualities that each of our students brings to the table. This year, the spotlight was on Josie, and you could feel the blend of anticipation and nervousness radiating off her.

Josie had always looked up to her sister Lizzie and me, both of us having been crowned Miss Mystic in our respective years. I could see how much this meant to her, not just as a personal achievement but as a way to honor our family's legacy. The Miss Mystic crown was something special to us, a symbol of perseverance, grace, and a bit of that iconic Forbes sparkle.

Lizzie had been a tremendous help in organizing the pageant. She’d taken on the role of pageant coordinator this year, handling everything from rehearsals to setting up the stage. It was her way of supporting Josie while also giving back to the tradition that meant so much to our family. She was doing an incredible job, and I couldn’t have been prouder of her. Both girls had their eyes set on that crown, and while Josie was feeling the pressure, Lizzie was there to make sure everything went smoothly.

As the rehearsals were in full swing, I felt a mix of pride and nostalgia. Watching Josie practice, I saw echoes of my own pageant days. She had a determination and a heart that reminded me so much of myself at her age. I knew she was giving it her all, and I had no doubt she’d make an impression tonight.

Finn and I arrived at the pageant venue, taking in the bustling activity. I noticed Finn's demeanor, and it was clear she was feeling a bit on edge. I sensed that there was more going on with her than just the pageant preparations. Sure enough, Elijah and Gabriel approached us, their expressions serious. They wanted to talk to Finn privately, and I could tell from her body language that she wasn’t thrilled about it.

"Hey, Caroline," Finn said, her voice steady despite her visible discomfort. "I’m going to step outside and talk to Elijah and Gabriel for a moment. I’ll be back soon."

I gave her an understanding nod. “No problem, Finn. We’ll hold down the fort here. Good luck.”

Finn walked out with Elijah and Gabriel, her back straight and her head held high. I could see the weight of the past few years hanging over her, the scars from old wounds that hadn’t quite healed. I hoped that this conversation wouldn’t be too taxing for her, especially with Josie’s big moment approaching.

As I turned back to the rehearsals, I couldn’t help but worry about Finn. But for now, I focused on what I could control: supporting Josie and making sure everything was perfect for her. The pageant was a time for celebration and hope, and I wanted to make sure Josie felt that she had all the support she needed.

The evening was going to be full of emotions—pride, excitement, and perhaps a few tears. But no matter what happened, I knew that Josie would shine, just like Lizzie had before her and just like I had in my own time. And, no matter what the outcome, she was already making us all incredibly proud.
