It was the night East Highland's annual carnival and Juliana was helping Nate's family set up their famous chilli stand, like she did every year since they started it.
She and Nate would spend most of the night there. They usually escaped for an hour or so to check out the rest of the carnival before the winner of the chilli cook off was announced, which of course, was the Jacobs family year after year.
Nate dreaded it since it meant having to act like a picture perfect family at their stupid booth, but at least Juliana was there with him.
The carnival lights twinkled like distant stars against the navy sky, beckoning throngs of people to the fairgrounds. The sweet aroma of cotton candy mingled with the tang of diesel from the rides, creating an electric atmosphere of excitement and anticipation.
"Don't worry, we'll be able to get away for a bit soon." Juliana smiled up at Nate as she picked up a big box of plastic spoons from the back of the booth.
He picked up a package of styrofoam bowls and napkins. "Not soon enough. Thanks for being here with me to suffer through it."
"You know I wouldn't miss it." She stood on her toes to give him a kiss on his freshly shaved cheek, which always made him feel better.
"Can you guys just fuck already or what?" Aaron, Nate's older brother, commented from behind them, where he was sitting down holding his cellphone in one hand and a beer in the other.
"Fuck off," Nate sneered at him before bringing the supplies up to his parents.
Juliana just chuckled and rolled her eyes, used to Aaron's annoying comments. They didn't really bother her, not as much as they did Nate.
She followed him to the front, where McKay and Cassie had just arrived. She said hi and Nate greeted McKay with their typical handshake.
He looked back and forth between McKay and Cassie. "Are you guys like, in a relationship?" He asked McKay pointedly.
"Nah, we're just chillin'." McKay replied casually.
Juliana looked at Cassie, surprised, considering that Cassie had been telling her how well things were going with McKay, and how they had even exchanged 'I love yous'. Cassie looked extremely pissed off and turned to walk away as Nate, McKay and Cal started talking about football.
"That was so fucking rude," She mumbled just loud enough for Nate to hear, glaring at him. He was so sweet to her all the time, she sometimes forgot that he wasn't like that with everyone. "I'm going to make sure she's okay."
Before he could protest, she rushed after her blonde friend. "Cassie, wait!" She called out. "Are you okay?"
She turned around, her big blue eyes threatening to spill with tears at any moment. "McKay is such a fucking asshole."
