In some ways, going back to being friends was easier than Juliana and Nate anticipated. Certain aspects of their friendship came naturally to them since they had been so close for so many years.

They went back to being together almost constantly, spending their time hanging out at her house, going for walks, watching movies, talking, laughing, having sleepovers; all of the things that they did before.

But in other ways, rekindling their friendship was impossibly difficult.

Every time Juliana laughed, or waved at Nate after class in the school hallway, or sang along as loud as she could to her playlist in his truck, he wanted to grab her and tell her that there was no way this would work, because how could he be just friends with her after knowing it was like to have her?

As hard as it was, he knew he couldn't do that. When they were broken up and had no contact with each other, it was the worst time of his life. He knew that he fucked up, and he was going to have to live with being friends with her again.

At least for now.

He planned to prove to her that he was worthy of being with her again over time, and show her that he wouldn't make the same mistakes as before. He knew it wasn't going to happen overnight, but he was willing to wait.

The hardest part for Juliana was when they were cuddled up in bed at night, going to sleep. It took everything in her to not blurt out that she loved him and wanted to be with him again, despite the awful things he did when they together.

But she knew that they couldn't work together as a couple. He was too controlling, too jealous, and he couldn't contain himself or his temper. He was always like that when it came to her, and once they were in a relationship, it got out of control.

It was just the way he was, and to have him as her best friend was better than not having him at all.

"I don't believe it." Maddy took a sip from her bottle of water before looking around at the other girls at the table. "There's no way they're not fucking, right?"

It was Friday afternoon and Juliana, Maddy, Cassie, Kat and BB were all sitting in the cafeteria for lunch. Juliana had filled them all in on what was going on between her and Nate.

Kat laid her phone down and focused her eyes on her, like she was trying to tell if she was lying or not. "It is kind of hard to believe."

"Y'all are definitely still fuckin'." BB agreed.

"I can see you guys working as friends again." Cassie, ever the hopeful one, said.

"Thank you, Cass. I don't know why the rest of you don't believe me."

"How can you go from being like, madly in love and having sex all the time to being just friends again?" Maddy asked, still sounding like she didn't trust a word Juliana said.
