the little girl looked up at the person standing above her, squinting slightly in the bright sunlight. it was early september and she had started schools a few weeks ago. despite only being six years old, she struggled to fit in with her classmates and found herself playing alone most days.

she was currently sitting in the sandpit, holding a spider soft toy in one hand and pushing a toy digger through the sand with the other. nobody else wanted to play with her, but now there was a shadow casting over her. she looked up to find a brunette boy looking down at her, a smile on his face.

''hi.''

''hi.'' she said shyly.

''can i play with you?'' he asked. ''my brother's don't want to play in the sandpit but i don't like playing by myself.''

''sure!'' she answered, moving backwards slightly to let him in. he smiled again, sitting on his knees opposite the girl. she hesitated for a moment before holding the digger out. ''do you want it?''

''thanks!'' he grinned, taking it eagerly. he pushed it through the sand, making car noises with his mouth for a few moments before noticing the girl's spider plush. he gasped, looking back at her face. ''that's so scary!''

''no, it isn't! i love spiders!''

''would you ever have one for your pet?''

she nodded.

he looked at her for a moments and then laughed. ''you're weird...i like you! do you want to be friends?''

''you want to be friends with me?'' she echoed.

''yes!'' he replied enthusiastically before frowning. ''or do you already have a friend?''

''i don't.'' she said. ''i want to be friends with you.''

he smiled. ''good! my name's matt.''

''i'm tate.''

the two of them looked at each other for a few seconds before beginning to play a game. tate tried her best to concentrate, but she couldn't stop smiling.

matt sturniolo was her first friend.

''yo, tate!''

she grinned, not even turning since it was a daily greeting. ''yo, matt!''
