The familiar buzz of the set filled the air, a hum of activity that usually made Elise feel at home. But today, even with the clattering of cameras, the faint rustling of scripts, and the low murmur of crew members, Elise couldn't shake the unease that had settled in her chest. The distance between her and Charlize, which had been slowly growing over the past few days, was beginning to weigh on her in a way she hadn't expected.

It was subtle-almost imperceptible to anyone watching from the outside-but it was there. The effortless banter they once shared now felt stilted, and moments that used to be filled with laughter now seemed quiet, tense. Charlize was pulling back, and Elise had no idea why.

She stood off to the side, absentmindedly scrolling through her phone, trying to block out the swirling thoughts that plagued her. Tanya, her longtime friend and confidante, had been watching Elise from across the room, her sharp eyes picking up on the subtle changes in her mood.

Tanya had always known Elise better than anyone. She could read the slightest shift in Elise's demeanor, and today, Elise's discomfort was impossible to miss.

"What's going on with you?" Tanya asked, slipping beside her with a casual, knowing glance.

Elise stiffened, her thumb pausing mid-scroll. "What do you mean?"

"You've been acting weird," Tanya continued, her voice quiet but firm. "And don't pretend like you haven't noticed. This isn't the Elise I know."

Elise bit her lip, unsure of how to respond. She had never been good at expressing her feelings, especially when it came to something as complicated as whatever was going on between her and Charlize. She was still trying to figure it out herself.

"I'm fine," Elise said, but even she didn't believe the words as they left her mouth.

Tanya gave her a pointed look. "Don't lie to me. I've known you too long for that."

Elise sighed, leaning against the wall behind her, her shoulders slumping slightly. "It's just... I don't know. Things have been weird between me and Charlie lately. I can't explain it."

Tanya raised an eyebrow. "Weird how?"

"We've always been close, you know? Like, we could talk about anything, joke around, and it was easy. But recently, it feels like she's pulling away from me. I don't know if I did something wrong or if it's just in my head, but..." Elise trailed off, frustration bubbling up inside her.

Tanya regarded her with a thoughtful expression before speaking. "You're both acting strange, actually. I've noticed it."

Elise's eyes widened slightly. "You have?"

Tanya nodded. "It's not just you. Charlie is acting distant too. You're both tiptoeing around each other like something's changed. So, the real question is: what are you not telling me?"

Elise swallowed, her heart pounding in her chest. She had always been careful, so careful, about keeping her private life just that-private. But with Tanya, there was no use pretending.

"I'm not even sure I know what's going on myself," Elise admitted quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's just... I've been feeling things I didn't expect to feel. And I'm not sure how to handle it."

Tanya's eyes softened with understanding. She didn't press further, allowing Elise to process her emotions in her own time. After a moment, she placed a gentle hand on Elise's arm. "Whatever it is, you don't have to figure it out alone, you know. But if it's something you're afraid of, maybe you need to look closer at why."

Elise looked at Tanya, the weight of her words sinking in. The truth was, she knew exactly why she was afraid. She had spent her entire life hiding, pretending, and pushing down any feelings that didn't fit into the carefully constructed image she had built for herself. Growing up in a conservative family, where even a whisper of her true self would be met with rejection, had conditioned her to keep her guard up.
