Charlize sat in her trailer, her eyes fixed on the script in front of her, though the words seemed to blur together into an indistinguishable mess. The scene she was supposed to prepare for demanded her full attention, but her mind was somewhere else entirely—consumed by thoughts of Elise.
Their conversation the night before had left her shaken, though not in a way she could easily describe. It wasn't fear, exactly, but more of a deep uncertainty. For months, they had danced around this connection, unsure of what to do with it, where it could lead, or if it would ever be safe to let it grow. Now that Elise had finally opened up, confessing things Charlize knew were difficult to say out loud, everything had changed. The walls were starting to come down, but with them came a flood of emotions that neither of them was ready to handle.
Charlize was used to controlling her feelings, keeping them in check for the sake of professionalism, for the sake of the image she had built. She had worked hard to reach this point in her career, and there was no way she was going to jeopardize it—not for anyone. But the more time she spent with Elise, the more she began to question what she was really protecting.
Was it her career? Her public persona? Or was it the fear of rejection, of being vulnerable in a way she hadn't allowed herself to be in years?
Her phone buzzed on the table, pulling her out of her thoughts. She glanced at the screen: Melissa.
Of course, Melissa would be the one reaching out now. She had been Charlize's friend and confidant for years, someone who had seen her through the highs and lows of the industry, someone who understood the unspoken rules that governed their lives. If there was anyone Charlize could talk to about this—anyone who wouldn't judge her for her uncertainty—it was Melissa.
Charlize hesitated for a moment, staring at the phone as it buzzed again. She could ignore it, pretend that everything was fine and that she wasn't on the verge of making a decision that could change everything. But something in her knew she needed to talk about it, to say the things that had been weighing on her since the night before.
"Hey, you," Melissa's voice was warm, familiar. "You doing okay? You've been a bit off the past couple of days."
Charlize let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "Yeah, I guess I've just... got a lot on my mind."
Melissa didn't push right away, but Charlize knew she would. It was part of what made her a good friend—she knew when to give space and when to press. "Anything you want to talk about?" Melissa asked, her tone casual but concerned.
Charlize hesitated, unsure where to even begin. "It's... complicated," she admitted. "And I don't even know if I should be talking about it."
"Complicated usually means important," Melissa replied. "And you can talk to me, Charlie. You know that."
Charlize closed her eyes, leaning back in her chair as she tried to find the right words. "It's about P'El."
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line. "P'El... as in your co-star P'Elise?"
"Yeah," Charlize confirmed, feeling a strange mix of relief and apprehension at finally saying it out loud.
Melissa's tone shifted, becoming more serious. "What's going on with you two? I thought everything was fine between you."
"It is. I mean, it's not bad, but..." Charlize trailed off, unsure how to explain the complicated knot of feelings that had formed between them. "We've gotten really close. Closer than I expected, honestly. And last night, we had this... moment. She told me things about her life that she's never told anyone before. And now, I just don't know what to do."
