The sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving behind a cool, dusky sky as Elise and Charlize stood in the quiet evening air. Their brief exchange had ended with the promise of a conversation, but as the moments passed, neither of them seemed eager to break the silence.

Elise glanced at Charlize, who was staring off into the distance, her brow furrowed in thought. There was something about the way Charlize held herself-tense, guarded-that made Elise's heart ache. She had been so distant lately, so unreachable. And yet, standing here now, there was an unmistakable pull between them, a sense that if they didn't speak soon, they'd lose whatever fragile connection still lingered.

Elise opened her mouth, ready to finally ask what was on her mind, but the words didn't come. Instead, she found herself blurting out something entirely different.

"Do you want to come over to my place?"

Charlize blinked, her head snapping toward Elise, clearly caught off guard. "What?"

Elise felt a flush of embarrassment creep up her neck. She hadn't planned this, hadn't even considered the idea until the words had left her lips. But now, with Charlize standing there, she couldn't take it back.

"I mean," Elise stammered, "I'm having a small gathering tonight. Just a few friends-Tanya, Nadia, and a couple of others. I thought... maybe you'd like to come?"

Charlize's eyes softened, but there was a flicker of hesitation behind them. "Are you sure?"

Elise nodded quickly, her heart pounding. "Yeah, I am. I think it'd be nice. It's just a casual thing, no pressure."

It was more than that, though. Inviting Charlize into her home felt monumental, a step Elise had never taken with anyone from work before. Her personal space had always been just that-personal. But something about Charlize made her want to break those walls, even if she wasn't quite sure why.

Charlize hesitated for a moment, as if weighing her options, then finally nodded. "Okay, sure. I'd love to."

Relief flooded through Elise, and she offered a small, tentative smile. "Great. It starts in about an hour, so... I'll text you my address?"

Charlize returned the smile, though there was still a flicker of something unreadable in her expression. "Yeah, that sounds good."

An hour later, Elise was pacing her living room, her nerves fraying at the edges. Tanya and Nadia had already arrived, chatting in the kitchen as they sipped on glasses of wine, but Elise's mind was elsewhere. She couldn't stop thinking about Charlize-about what her invitation meant, about how vulnerable it felt to let someone like her into this part of her life.

"El, you okay?" Tanya's voice broke through her thoughts, pulling her back to the present.

Elise turned to her, offering a distracted smile. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just... nervous, I guess."

Tanya raised an eyebrow. "Nervous? Since when do you get nervous about having people over?"

Elise hesitated, not sure how to explain the tangled mess of emotions inside her. "It's not that. It's just... Charlie is coming."

Tanya exchanged a glance with Nadia, who had been quietly watching from the kitchen. "Oh," Tanya said, her tone shifting to something more knowing. "So that's what's got you on edge."

Elise bit her lip, unsure of how much to say. She hadn't confided in anyone about the growing tension between her and Charlize-not fully, anyway. But now, with Tanya and Nadia standing there, it felt like the words were bubbling up, desperate to be released.

"I don't know what's going on between us," Elise admitted quietly, her gaze dropping to the floor. "She's been so distant lately, and I can't figure out why. And now... I invited her here, and I don't even know why I did that."
