The soft hum of the city outside Elise's apartment window did nothing to quiet the storm swirling inside her. It had been weeks since the misunderstanding with Charlize, and the weight of it had settled deep into her bones, leaving her feeling more exhausted than any long day on set ever had. The silence between them had grown into something unbearable, a chasm that she didn't know how to cross. She had hoped that throwing herself into work, ignoring the ache in her chest, would help. It hadn't.
Now, sitting alone in her dimly lit living room, Elise felt the full brunt of her confusion pressing in on her. She hadn't been sleeping well. Every night, she would lie awake replaying the last few months in her mind, trying to pinpoint the moment things had changed, the moment her feelings for Charlize had gone from mere friendship to something more, something she couldn't ignore.
And yet, she was terrified. Terrified of what it would mean to admit those feelings, to give them voice and shape. To do so would be to acknowledge the undeniable truth: that Charlize was more than a friend, more than a co-star. She was something infinitely more complicated.
The shrill ring of her phone jolted her from her thoughts. Elise glanced at the screen, surprised to see Tanya's name flash across it.
"Hey," she answered, her voice tired.
"El, you sound like you've been hit by a truck," Tanya's familiar voice came through, half teasing, half concerned. "What's going on?"
Elise exhaled, leaning back into the cushions. "It's nothing. Just a lot on my mind."
"Is it about Charlie?" Tanya's question was so direct, so unflinchingly honest, that it made Elise flinch. She had been so careful not to bring it up with anyone—especially not Tanya, who had a knack for seeing straight through her.
Elise paused, her grip tightening around the phone. "It's... complicated."
Tanya sighed on the other end, the kind of sigh that comes from someone who's already pieced together everything, even if you haven't. "Complicated how? You two were practically inseparable before. Now, it's like you're avoiding her."
Elise closed her eyes, leaning her head against the back of the couch. "I don't know, Tanya. Everything feels messed up. I'm trying to keep things professional, but I don't even know what that means anymore. Every time I'm around her, I—"
She stopped herself, unsure of how much she wanted to reveal.
"You what?" Tanya prompted gently.
Elise swallowed, the words she had been burying for so long suddenly rising to the surface. "I feel... things. Things I don't know how to deal with."
There was a brief silence on the other end, and for a moment, Elise thought she had said too much.
"Do you have feelings for her?" Tanya asked, her voice soft, as if she already knew the answer.
Elise felt her heart hammer in her chest. She had been avoiding this question for weeks, maybe even months, afraid that saying it out loud would make it real. But she couldn't run from it anymore.
"I think I do," she whispered, the admission feeling both terrifying and liberating.
Tanya didn't respond immediately, but when she did, her voice was full of warmth and understanding. "El, there's nothing wrong with that. You care about her—anyone with eyes can see it."
Elise opened her eyes, staring blankly at the ceiling. "But what if it's more than that? What if I... I'm scared, Tanya. I'm scared that if I let myself feel this way, everything will fall apart. Our friendship, our work—everything."
