The days following the fallout felt like a blur. Yoko tried to keep her head down, but it wasn’t easy when her entire life had been put on display. The whispers at university were relentless—rumors and gossip fueled by both her sudden rise in attention and the leaked story about her relationship with Faye. She could feel the eyes on her, the stares that lingered too long, the muffled conversations that quieted whenever she entered a room.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket, a small lifeline in an otherwise overwhelming day. It was a message from Faye.
Faye: How are you holding up today? I know it’s rough, but we’ll get through this together.
Yoko glanced around to make sure no one was looking before typing a response.
Yoko: It’s hard. Feels like everyone’s judging me, even people I don’t know. But I’m hanging in there. How about you?
The reply came quickly.
Faye: I miss you. It’s been strange not being on campus. I’m at home, honestly, I’m sad I’m not there right now. I just want to be with you.
Yoko smiled at the message, despite the tension weighing down her shoulders. She missed Faye too—more than she could put into words. Her absence from campus made Yoko feel lonelier, but it also gave her space to reflect. The life she had been living, the secrecy, the constant hiding, the stress of it all.
The day dragged on, and Yoko pushed through her classes, avoiding eye contact and choosing the farthest seat in every room. By the time she got back to her house, she was mentally exhausted. As she entered the house, she noticed a note left by her parents: "Back at 8 PM." A small sigh escaped her, knowing she had the place to herself for the next 6 hours. Throwing her bag, she collapsed on the sofa, staring at the ceiling. Her phone buzzed again.
Faye: What are you up to? Home yet?
She hesitated. Faye had already been through so much because of her—lost her job, her reputation. Could Yoko really ask for more? But as she lay there, she realized that she didn’t want to go through this alone.
Yoko: Just got home. My parents aren’t here, won’t be back until 8 PM.
Faye: Sounds like plenty of time. Want some company?
Yoko: Yeah, that sounds nice.
A moment later, another message popped up.
Faye: Are you hungry? I can pick something up on my way.
Yoko paused, realizing she hadn’t eaten much all day.
Yoko: Some ramen would be good if you’re passing by anywhere.
Faye: Ramen it is. I’ll be there soon.
Not long after, Faye showed up at her door, a warm smile on her face and a bag of takeout in her hand. They exchanged smiles as Yoko let her in and embraced her.
“I’m so sorry,” Yoko whispered into Faye’s shoulder.
Faye pulled back slightly, cupping Yoko’s cheek. “For what? You don’t need to apologize for anything. We’re in this together. I knew what I was risking, and I don’t regret it.”
Yoko felt her eyes well up but blinked the tears away. “I just hate that you had to go through all of this because of me.”
Faye shook her head. “I’d do it again and again if it meant we could be together.”
As she spoke, Faye leaned in and gently kissed Yoko’s forehead, her lips lingering for a moment. She then whispered softly, “It’s all going to be okay.”
