It was a very long walk, and Mirabel found herself in a field of sunflowers, which had yellow petals with blue tips. Mirabel was mesmerized by these beautiful flowers, and she decided to take a little break.
"Wow, I'm lucky," Mirabel told herself. "These ruby chanclas are very comfortable, and they fit perfectly. It's a very long walk to Ciudad de Amitista, and I'm certain my old shoes would've worn out by now. I only wish I knew how far Ciudad de Amitista is from here."
"Oh, not very far, depending on where you are," a voice rang out.
Mirabel was spooked—she wondered if she was being stalked. "Okay, ¿quien dijo eso?" she asked defensively.
"Oh, era yo," the voice rang out again.
Mirabel turned to find that it was a scarecrow up on a stand. "Oh, un espantapájaros," she gaped.
"That's me," Espantapájaros confirmed. "Now who are you, and what do you do?"
"Oh, I'm Mirabel, and I'm an artist," Mirabel smiled.
"Yo puedo ver," Espantapájaros smiled. "I love the contrasting colors of your dress."
"Gracias," Mirabel smiled. Then she noticed that Espantapájaros was a little unhappy from being up on that frame. "Not very comfortable up there, are you?"
"No, I've been up here for a long time," Espantapájaros admitted.
"Do you want me to let you down?" Mirabel offered.
"Por favor, señorita," Espantapájaros smiled.
Mirabel carefully untied Espantapájaros's arms from the frame, and he came down.
"Ah, muchas gracias," Espantapájaros smiled.
"De nada," Mirabel smiled back. "So, do you know if Ciudad de Amitista is near or far?"
Espantapájaros tried to answer Mirabel's question, but there was no way he could. "You know, you really shouldn't ask me," he replied. "You see, mija, no tengo celebro."
"No brain?" Mirabel asked.
"No, all straw," Espantapájaros said. "I wish I had a brain. Every night, I wish upon a star for a brain, but the crows always remind me that it's too good to be true."
Mirabel felt rather sorry for her new friend. "What would you do with a brain if you had one?" she asked.
"Why, if I had a brain, I could...," Espantapájaros started to reply before he started to sing.
ESPANTAPÁJAROS: I could while away the hours
Conferring with the flowers
Consulting with the rain
And my head, I'd be scratching
While my thoughts were busy hatching if I only had a brain
I'd unravel every riddle
For any individual
In trouble or in pain
MIRABEL: With the thoughts you'd be thinking
Your esteem would not be sinking
If you only had a brain
ESPANTAPÁJAROS: Oh, I could tell you why
The ocean's near the shore
I could think the things I never thought before
And then I'd sit and think some more
I would not be just a nuffing
My head all full of stuffing
My heart all full of pain
I would dance and be merry
Life would be a ding-a-derry
If I only had a brain
Diós, it would awful pleasing
To reason out the reason
For things I can't explain
But perhaps I'll deserve you
And be even worthy of you
If I only had a brain
Mirabel was impressed with how Espantapájaros was singing and dancing. "Guau, que maravilloso," she smiled. "From what I can see you have more brains than my high school bullies back in Bahía de Mariposa."
"¿Tú crees?" Espantapájaros asked.
"Yo sé," Mirabel smiled.
"Where's Bahía de Mariposa?" Espantapájaros asked.
"It's a town where I live," Mirabel replied. "I want to go back there so badly that I'm going all the way to Ciudad de Amitista to ask el Mago de Oz to help me." Then she came up with an idea. "Espantapájaros, why don't you come with me? I'm certain he'll help you get a brain."
Espantapájaros liked the sound of that. "I'd love that," he smiled. "Okay, to Oz?" He offered his arm to Mirabel.
"To Oz," Mirabel smiled, taking his arm. She and Espantapájaros skipped down the Yellow Brick Road as they sang their travel song.
