After another long walk, Mirabel and Espantapájaros found themselves in a forest of trees, each with blended colors.
"Wow, this is only the most colorful forest I've ever seen," Espantapájaros gaped. "Actually, this is the only forest I've ever seen."
Mirabel noticed a tree with yellow and blue blended together with some green. "Looks like this tree didn't finish mixing its colors," she joked. But then she and Espantapájaros heard something. "¿Oíste algo?"
"Sí, it sounds like it's coming from somewhere over there," Espantapájaros said, pointing in the distance.
Mirabel and Espantapájaros went a little further down the road, and she stopped when she saw a nearby man made of tin—and that's where the sound was coming from.
"Whoa, it's a man, un hombre de estaño," Mirabel gaped. She was mesmerized by this sight, but she could barely hear what this man was saying. "¿Dijíste algo?" She listened carefully to what Estaño was trying to say. "He said 'key'."
"Key what?" Espantapájaros asked.
Mirabel went around and found a key attached to Estaño's back. "He just needs a windup," she said. She carefully wound the key until it couldn't be wound anymore, and Estaño was moving.
"Muchas gracias," Estaño smiled. "Yo soy Estaño."
"I'm Mirabel, and this is Espantapájaros," Mirabel smiled.
"Hola," Espantapájaros smiled.
"Hola," Estaño smiled. "You don't know how grateful I am that you came to help me. I've been stuck there for ages. Oh, if only I had a heart instead of a key, I'd be going all over the place endlessly."
"¿No tienes corazón?" Espantapájaros and Mirabel asked in unison.
"Ni un corazón, todo vacío," Estaño sighed. "The tinsmith didn't even think to give me one." Then he sadly began to sing.
ESTAÑO: When a man's an empty kettle
He should be on his metal
And yet I'm torn apart
Just because I'm presumin'
That I kind could kinda human
If I only had a heart
I'd be tender, I'd be gentle
And awful sentimental
Regarding love and art
I'd be friends with the sparrows
And the boy who shoots the arrows
If I only had a heart
Picture me a balcony
Above a voice sings low
MIRABEL: Wherefore art thou, Romeo?
ESTAÑO: I hear a beat
How sweet
Just to register emotion
Jealousy, devotion
And really feel the part
I could stay young and chipper
And I'd lock it with a zipper
If I only had a heart
Mirabel felt rather sorry for Estaño, and she had an idea. "Oye, why can't you go with us to ask el Mago de Oz for a heart?" she suggested.
"You really I should?" Estaño asked.
"Sí, it's worth a try, and I know because I'm going to ask him for a brain," Espantapájaros smiled.
"And I'm going to ask him to send me home to Bahía de Mariposa," Mirabel smiled. "I'm certain he'll give you a heart. Estoy segura."
Estaño thought about it—he really wanted a heart. "Well, I sure hope the heart he gives me is just as good as the one you have," he smiled. "¿Vamos?"
"Vamos," Mirabel smiled, taking both his and Espantapájaros's arms. She and her friends skipped down the Yellow Brick Road as they sang their travel song.

But there was something Mirabel and her friends didn't know. In the west part of Oz, la Bruja Malvada was watching the trio with a crystal ball.
"So, la señorita is making friends," la Bruja told herself. "She thinks she can just waltz around Oz and charm everyone with her so-called beauty." She was proud of being the most beautiful in Oz, and she was very jealous of Mirabel's beauty.
