Chapter 25: Echoes of the Void
The wind rustled softly through the crumbling streets of the Lost City of Kyr as Yuuji and his companions stood in the eerie silence left behind by the vanquished creatures. The obelisk’s glow had faded, but the energy it had unleashed still lingered in the air, as if the city itself had momentarily awakened from its long slumber.
Yuuji wiped the sweat from his brow, his mind racing. The creatures they had just fought were unlike any chaos beasts he had encountered before—there had been something darker, more sinister, about them. And while the city’s magic had saved them, he knew it wasn’t a permanent solution.
“We’re not safe here,” the knight said, his sword still drawn as he scanned their surroundings. “Those things will return, and next time, we might not be so lucky.”
The mage nodded, her eyes still fixed on the obelisk. “This place is a repository of ancient knowledge, but it’s also a conduit for power. Whatever dark forces are tied to the void, they’re drawn to it.”
Yuuji took a deep breath, turning to his companions. “We need to find out more about this connection. The chaos we’ve faced is just one part of the puzzle, and if the void is as dangerous as the figure said, we’re running out of time.”
The archer, standing with her bow still in hand, tilted her head. “So, what’s the plan? We need more information, but I’m not exactly keen on getting ambushed again.”
The mage took a step forward, her gaze intense. “I can sense something deeper within the city. There’s an ancient library, or maybe a vault—it’s hard to tell. But I think that’s where we’ll find the answers we need. It’s not far from here.”
Yuuji glanced at the others. Exhaustion lined their faces, but they all knew what was at stake. Resting wasn’t an option, not when the void’s presence loomed so heavily over them. He nodded. “Then let’s move. But we need to stay alert. Whatever those creatures were, they’re not the only ones here.”
They set off through the streets once more, this time with a clearer sense of purpose. The city around them felt alive with latent energy, as if the stones themselves hummed with ancient magic. The buildings were in worse condition the farther they went—collapsed towers, half-buried plazas, and crumbling arches surrounded them on all sides, whispering of a forgotten age.
As they ventured deeper, Yuuji couldn’t shake the feeling that they were walking into something far more dangerous than they had anticipated. His grip on the Blade of Eterna tightened, the weapon’s faint glow flickering in response to the tension in the air.
After what felt like hours, they reached a massive structure at the heart of the city—a towering building that had somehow remained mostly intact. Vines crawled up its walls, and the entrance was partially collapsed, but the ancient doors stood tall, covered in intricate carvings of celestial bodies and runes.
“This is it,” the mage whispered, awe in her voice. “The central vault of Kyr.”
Yuuji stepped forward, his eyes scanning the carvings. He recognized some of the symbols as representations of balance and magic, but others were far more alien to him—twisted shapes that seemed to warp the longer he looked at them.
The knight pushed open the doors with a grunt, revealing a grand chamber inside. The walls were lined with shelves that had once been filled with scrolls and tomes, though most were now either missing or disintegrated with age. At the far end of the room stood a large pedestal, and above it, a glowing orb floated, casting an eerie light over the chamber.
The mage approached the orb cautiously, her eyes wide with curiosity. “This is a nexus of magical knowledge,” she breathed. “It contains the accumulated wisdom of the scholars of Kyr. If there are answers about the void, they’ll be here.”
