The machine next to me beeps quietly
Like a clock slowly ticking
The lights in my room a dim
A thin white blanket rests on top of meI ask the nurse in the blue scrubs if she'll go for a walk with me
She walks with me slowly
My arm locked with hersWe stop in a hallway that has glass along the walls
Outside is dark
The lights from surrounding buildings can be seen
There's a sense of calm around usThe nurses hands are dry and cracked from constant wash
Her eyes are heavy and blank
She releases my arm and rests her hands on the railing
We watch the lights together
In silenceWe're both tired
In different ways
Her mind is struggling
My body isWe stand together in silent comfort
Her shoulders dip
Her eyes flutter close for a moment
We stand there for a momentOur walk back is slow and silent
I leave the next dayI'll always remember the nurse in blue scrubs
Who stood with me in silent comfort
