SCENE 3

SETTING: Outside on a sunny day at a British troop encampment in Boston. Barren landscape with a few trees dotting the background and a few tents set up.

AT RISE: Stage left, front. A group of young lads in dirty clothing and dirty boots horseplay while others play cards and roast corn over a fire.

(His majesty's emissary, led by the local officer, arrives at the Boston encampment. None of the lads seem concerned or aware of the dire situation in New York and continue to horseplay and act as if they are at a summer camp.)

His majesty's emissary

Blimey, matey. What's the situation here? Why are we not on our way to New York? Did you not receive His Majesty's Eeeeh-mail?

local officer

Eeeeeh-mail? What Eeeeeh-mail?

His majesty's emissary

The one his majesty sent with orders to move forward to New York and take siege!

local officer

Ohhhh. Must have gotten lost in the cloud.

(All on stage look up up to the sky, searching for the Eeeeeh-mail. Laugh track plays).

His majesty's emissary

I suppose that's why you shouldn't trust technology.

(HIS MAJESTY'S EMMISARY gestures to YOUNG LAD who's trying to eat a corn cob with difficulty due to his missing front teeth.)

Hey, young lad! Where's your commander in charge?

(He walks towards the young lads, followed by LOCAL OFFICER and all other lads on stage. YOUNG LAD trips as he follows the group off-stage left.

Scene goes dark as spotlight moves to stage right center, where the American side is set up. Hamilton and Jefferson are busy at a desk illuminated by a light over what appears to be a draft of the Declaration of Independence.)

Jefferson

This is going to be huge!

Hamilton

You bet it is. Is it really going to be a republic?

Jefferson

Well, that's what Benny says, if we can keep it.

(Both men look straight at the audience, pensive, solemn looks. AUDIENCE PROMTER walks in from stage left and joins them.)

Hamilton

I bet this is going to make history!

Jefferson

Ya think?

(All actors start shuffling in and get on stage. "Dancing in the Moonlight" by King Harvest takes over and all start dancing. AUDIENCE PROMTER flashes sign "applause,' and 'laugh' in turn. Applause track plays over music as it fades out)
