The Perilous Path of South Pt 2
Third Pov
Thane and his brothers stood at the edge of the Infernum Spire, the suffocating air of hell swirling around them. The Southern Underworld lay far beyond, a realm filled with shadows darker than the night and spirits more dangerous than the damned themselves. They all knew what awaited them on their journey, but none dared speak it aloud.
"We head south," Thane muttered, his voice devoid of hesitation but weighed by the burden of what lay ahead. His brothers, though sinful and cursed with their own dark natures, shared the same unspoken fear—facing the Southern Queen would be no small feat.
Gage walked beside him, the angelic markings burning beneath his skin, a constant reminder that time was running out. His usually vibrant energy was dimming with each passing moment, and Thane's heart ached at the sight. Despite everything, Gage tried to maintain a brave face.
"I can handle this, you know," Gage whispered, though the strain in his voice betrayed his confidence.
Thane shook his head. "No, you can’t. Not alone. We face this together."
Ahead of them, the horizon burned a deep crimson as the Southern Underworld loomed closer. The path was jagged, full of desolation, with souls lost to their suffering lining the rocky landscape. As they descended deeper into the heart of the South, a strange, eerie silence blanketed their surroundings. Even the usual wails and moans of the tortured souls had subsided.
"Do you feel that?" Gideon muttered, his sharp gaze sweeping the area.
"Yeah," Kurgan replied, his eyes narrowed. "Something's wrong."
Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled, and from the shadows, dark, twisted creatures emerged—soulless spirits, sent by the Southern Queen to test the resolve of any who dared trespass. Their forms were grotesque, shifting between humanoid shapes and serpentine beasts.
"Prepare yourselves!" Thane shouted, his voice a command that shook his brothers from their uneasy silence.
The first of the creatures lunged, a mass of writhing limbs and piercing shrieks. Thane met it head-on, his fist colliding with its face, but the creature dissolved into smoke, reforming behind him in an instant. They were not just physical threats; they were manifestations of torment, feeding on fear and guilt.
"They're illusions!" Elijah yelled. "Don't let them into your head!"
But it was easier said than done. The creatures whispered horrors into their minds, each one revealing the deepest fears and regrets of the group. Gideon faltered for a moment, his eyes widening as the creature in front of him transformed into something familiar—his human lover from centuries past, the one he had betrayed for power.
"Stop... You're not real," Gideon muttered, but his hand wavered.
Thane, sensing his brother's struggle, moved swiftly. With a powerful swing of his weapon, he shattered the illusion in front of Gideon, bringing him back to reality.
"Focus!" Thane growled. "These things will destroy you if you let them."
One by one, the brothers fought back, resisting the psychological onslaught as best they could. Gage, weakened as he was, held his own, his determination to survive pushing him through the pain. The angelic markings on his skin glowed faintly, casting a protective light that seemed to repel the creatures momentarily.
But the relief was short-lived. From the shadows, a figure emerged, more formidable than the creatures they'd just faced. She was tall, draped in a gown of shimmering obsidian, her skin pale as moonlight. Her eyes were like two dark voids, and her lips curled into a smile that dripped with malice.
The Queen of the Southern Underworld had arrived.
"Thane," she spoke, her voice a sultry whisper that seemed to wrap around their minds like tendrils. "You've come far... and for what? To die at my feet?"
Thane stepped forward, resolute but aware of the danger that lay before him. "I come to bargain," he said, keeping his tone steady despite the immense pressure radiating from her.
The Queen's smile widened. "A bargain? You think you can ask me for favors, little Wrath?" She laughed, the sound echoing through the desolate landscape. "And why should I help you?"
"I need you to restore Lucifer’s wings," Thane said, cutting straight to the point. "Do that, and I will grant you what you seek."
The Queen tilted her head, curiosity flashing across her features. "And what is it you think I seek?"
"Freedom," Thane answered, a gleam in his eyes. "To rule all the realms of the underworld, without Lucifer to overshadow you. I can give you that."
Her eyes flickered with interest, but she was not so easily swayed. "Interesting... but freeing me from Lucifer would bring chaos beyond even your understanding, Thane. Are you willing to face that?"
Thane clenched his fists, his mind racing. He had no choice. For Gage, for his brothers, for his own sanity, he had to take this risk.
"I’ll face whatever comes," he replied. "As long as you give me what I need."
The Queen studied him for a long moment, her expression unreadable. Then, she raised her hands, her fingers crackling with dark energy as she began to chant in a demonic tongue:
"Azgathor venimus, inferno sanguine connexus, alas divinae cadentium restituo, potestas lucis occidat in tenebris!"
The air around them thickened, and the ground beneath their feet trembled violently. Dark flames erupted from the earth, swirling around the Queen as her spell reached its crescendo. The energy in the air was suffocating, ancient and malevolent, as if all the malice of the underworld was converging in that single moment.
The Queen lowered her hands, her voice a soft hiss as she declared, "It is done."
Thane felt the weight of her words, knowing that Lucifer's wings had been restored—but at a cost that was yet to be revealed. The power she had wielded was immense, and the consequences, no doubt, far-reaching.
The Queen turned her dark gaze to Thane, her lips curling into a sinister smile. "But don't forget, Thane," she whispered, her voice carrying the weight of a thousand promises. "You owe me."
Without another word, she vanished into the shadows, leaving Thane and his brothers standing in the aftermath of her dark magic. The ground was still trembling slightly, but it was the weight of her words that lingered the most.
Thane looked at Gage, who seemed momentarily relieved as the angelic markings on his skin dimmed, but the danger was far from over.
"Let’s go," Thane said, his voice hoarse. "We need to return to Lucifer before this deal turns even darker."
