A young man with spiky black hair that shaded his blue eyes slowly stepped onto the battlefield with his hands in his pockets and donned a rather anhedonic expression. On his left shoulder sat a fox-like Pokémon with a swarthy pelt and a playful expression across her face. "Cheren. It's been a while hasn't it? Two years, right?" The teenager asked as his eyes gradually narrowed while he eyed the students from Aspertia's Trainer School watching them prepare to battle. "The two trainers you had me face before I could reach you - they were strong. They knew their stuff. But the fundamentals of a Pokémon battle won't be enough for them to beat me..." He claimed, looking up at Cheren as the latter stood on elevated flooring before the young man.
Cheren stared down at the Pokémon Trainer and closed his eyes while adjusting his tie. "Keaton. I would have never expected to see you come through my school's doors...I thought you were..." The Aspertia City's gym leader quickly shook his head, dismissing negative thoughts about Keaton's sudden departure two years ago. "Nevermind. But to think the first time I see you again would be on the battlefield as my first ever gym challenger." He muttered as he seized a shrunk Poké Ball from his pocket and pressed the button at the center to enlarge it. Cheren didn't express himself often, so he kept his emotions in check and prepared to battle his old friend.
Cheren was a tall, slender young man with very pale skin, black eyes, and long jet-black hair with a small tuft that stuck up from the top of his head. Cheren wore a white dress shirt, an orange necktie, blue dress pants, and brown shoes.
"Too bad your first battle with a challenger will be your first loss as a gym leader," Keaton coldly replied. "Once I stepped into this gym, Shade and I decided that losing wasn't an option." His eyes averted to Shade, the Pokémon on his shoulder, the Zorua. This signaled to Shade that he wanted her to start his Pokémon battle against Cheren.
Shade nodded and snickered a bit. "I didn't think you'd throw me out there first, Keaton~. You must really wanna win this, huh~?" Asked the Pokémon. Yes, Shade was a talking Zorua. Ever since Keaton received her, she was a talking Pokémon. Anyways, Shade's body leaped off Keaton's shoulder as she flipped and landed on her feet. "It doesn't matter who you pull out, I'm gonna win, Cheren~," Zorua claimed before snickering.
