She snapped back to reality and tried to pull away, but the car suddenly swerved to avoid a reckless motorcyclist, causing her to fall toward him again, and they ended up "colliding" mouth-to-mouth.
The driver was about to apologize but, seeing their "position" in the rearview mirror, decided to stay quiet.
"Ouch—" This time, she didn't feel the bliss from the first kiss, just the pain of their teeth clashing.
Tao Jiajin also winced in pain but quickly put on a lazy smile and teased, "Even if you're satisfied, you don't need to pounce on me like a hungry tiger. It's making me shy."
"Tao Jiajin, stop being so smug. I wouldn't be satisfied with an unemployed guy." Yan Keyu blushed, raising her voice defensively. "And since you were only being handsy to make them believe in our relationship, I'll forgive you this time. But don't flatter yourself."
"Oh, I almost forgot about that." Tao Jiajin sat up straight, feeling a bit uneasy as she firmly dismissed any possibility between them.
The car fell into an awkward silence, making her feel restless.
With no one breaking the silence, the car slowly pulled up by the curb.
Yan Keyu looked outside; they were right in front of her house.
"Well... thanks for today," she mumbled.
Tao Jiajin glanced at her and quipped, "It's rare to hear a thank you from you."
"What are you talking about? I'm a good girl with manners." She boasted, feeling a bit guilty.
"Hahaha, didn't you say you don't have to pretend in front of me?" Honestly, he was more used to her true self. The gentle demeanor she put on at the birthday dinner was utterly bland.
"I still have my manners, okay?" Yan Keyu rolled her eyes, easing the atmosphere.
"Alright, I'll accept your thanks." He realized he enjoyed teasing her because her embarrassed look was so adorable, making him want to see it more often.
"And I'm not mocking you for being unemployed. I just think you're still young, why waste your life wandering? Do you know how many people with disabilities are fighting to live? You're perfectly healthy; you shouldn't give up on yourself." Yan Keyu explained what she meant earlier.
Seeing how seriously she was advising him, Tao Jiajin couldn't help but smile, reaching out to ruffle her hair, "I know, thank you."
"Uh—I just can't stand your lifestyle, nothing to thank me for." Why did she suddenly feel her heart race? His warm hand seemed to leave a lingering warmth on her head, making her almost hear her own heartbeat.
"Alright then, goodbye." He said his farewell.
"Goodbye." For some reason, she felt a bit of regret, probably because she'd never had such a handsome guy around her before.
"Goodbye," he replied cheerfully.
He didn't intend to stay, probably wanting to clear things up with her quickly, right? Didn't he find her attractive at all?
Yan Keyu suddenly felt an inexplicable sense of hurt. She opened the car door, stepped out, and quickly shook off the uninvited, inexplicable emotions. She rummaged through her bag, pulled out three thousand yuan, and handed it to him through the window, "This is all I have left; it should cover the car rental, right?"
Tao Jiajin raised an eyebrow, amused.
"I—I just don't want people to say I'm ungrateful, and I'll handle things from now on. Thank you." She awkwardly left the words and turned to leave before he could respond.
