*Chapter 5: The Resentment Within*

As the days passed, the conference unfolded with displays of martial prowess, cultivation techniques, and diplomatic meetings between sect leaders. It was during one of these gatherings that something unsettling happened.

Wen Ruohan, the formidable leader of the Wen sect, had taken an interest in the proceedings. His presence alone was enough to silence the crowd. He was known for his ambition, for his ruthless pursuit of power, and above all, for his mastery of *resentment energy*. The air around him seemed heavy, as if it was thick with the presence of dark forces.

Wei Ying could feel it the moment Wen Ruohan stepped into the hall. The *resentment* was palpable, a sinister whisper in the air. And, to his horror, he realized that he was the only one who seemed to notice it. His bloodline, his ability to control yin and yang, had made him sensitive to such forces. But in this moment, it was more than just a sense—it was a challenge.

Wen Ruohan’s gaze swept across the hall, lingering on Wei Ying for a heartbeat too long. There was a flicker of recognition in his eyes, as though he could sense the same dark power in Wei Ying that he himself wielded.

“*You,*” Wen Ruohan spoke, his voice cutting through the silence. “*You, boy. Step forward.*”

Wei Ying’s heart raced, but he masked his unease with a casual smile. “*Me?*” he asked innocently, stepping forward as Jiang Cheng shot him a warning glance. He could feel all eyes in the room turn toward him, including Nie Huaisang’s worried gaze and Lan Wangji’s piercing stare.

Wen Ruohan’s smile was cold, predatory. “*There’s something...unusual about you. What is it?*”

Wei Ying met Wen Ruohan’s gaze without flinching. “*I’m not sure what you mean, Wen-zongzhu,*” he said lightly, though his mind raced. He could feel the *resentment* swirling around him, like a storm threatening to break free.

“*Don’t play games with me,*” Wen Ruohan said, his voice low and dangerous. “*I can sense it. The darkness inside you. The resentment.*”

For a brief moment, Wei Ying’s façade slipped, and his eyes hardened. “*I don’t know what you’re talking about,*” he said evenly. But the tension in the air was unmistakable. Wen Ruohan was testing him, pushing him to reveal what he had hidden for so long.

The room was silent, every cultivator watching the exchange with bated breath. Even Lan Wangji, usually so stoic, was frowning in disapproval. To stand against Wen Ruohan was reckless, dangerous.

But Wei Ying held his ground.

After what felt like an eternity, Wen Ruohan let out a dark chuckle. “*We shall see,*” he said, turning away as if the matter was settled. “*Be careful, boy. The path you walk is a dangerous one.*”

As Wen Ruohan moved on, the tension in the room slowly dissipated, though Wei Ying could still feel the weight of Lan Wangji’s gaze on him. The look in his eyes was clear—*you’re reckless*.

Wei Ying, however, paid no mind. He had always been reckless. And now, he knew that Wen Ruohan was suspicious of him.
