Chapter 7: Leaving Lotus Pier**The pain in Wei Ying’s back was nothing compared to the ache in his chest. That night, as he lay in his room, staring up at the ceiling, the weight of everything crashed down on him. Madam Yu’s words echoed in his mind, but it was Jiang Fengmian’s silence that hurt the most.
All this time, he had stayed at Lotus Pier because of Fengmian. He had endured the cold stares, the veiled resentment, because he believed that at least Fengmian cared about him. But now...now he wasn’t so sure.
Wei Ying sat up, his body still sore from the lashes. His heart was heavy, his mind spinning with doubts and pain. He had always known he wasn’t truly part of the Jiang family. He had always known he was an outsider. But this...this felt different. It felt like he had been abandoned by the one person he thought he could rely on.
He couldn’t stay here anymore.
Wei Ying’s gaze fell on his desk, where a stack of parchment lay. Slowly, he stood and walked over, his hand trembling as he picked up a brush. His mind was made up.
He would leave.
The defection letter was short and to the point. He didn’t see the need for any lengthy explanations—there was nothing left to say. He simply stated his intention to leave Lotus Pier, to defect from the Jiang sect, and to never return.
When he finished, Wei Ying folded the letter and placed it on his desk. His eyes lingered on it for a moment, a part of him still hoping that someone—anyone—would come and stop him.
But no one did.

The next morning, before the sun had even risen, Wei Ying slipped out of Lotus Pier. The familiar sight of the courtyard, the docks, and the lake stretching into the horizon filled him with a bittersweet sense of finality. This had been his home for so long, but now, as he looked back at it, it felt distant—like a memory that didn’t belong to him anymore.
With nothing but the clothes on his back and a few supplies, Wei Ying made his way toward the Burial Mounds. It was the only place where he knew he would be safe, where resentment would obey him. He had always been drawn to the Burial Mounds, and now, it seemed fitting that it would become his new home.
As he reached the edge of Lotus Pier, Wei Ying paused, his heart heavy with emotion. He had spent years here, training, learning, and growing. But those years were behind him now. He was no longer Wei Wuxian of the Jiang sect.
He was simply Wei Ying.
With a final glance at the place he once called home, Wei Ying turned and disappeared into the early morning mist.
