Chapter 14: Arrival at Gusu
The Gusu Lan sect was as breathtaking as Wei Ying had imagined. Its pristine white towers stretched into the sky, surrounded by mist-covered mountains and shimmering lakes. It was a place of serenity, discipline, and rules—a stark contrast to the chaotic energy of the Burial Mounds.
As they entered the sect grounds, Xiao Xingchen explained the strict rules that governed the Lan clan. “No running, no loud laughter, no drinking, and especially no fighting,” he listed with a grin. “You’ll have to behave yourself.”
Wei Ying chuckled. “I’ll do my best. No promises, though.”
They were soon greeted by Lan Qiren, the stern teacher of the Lan sect, who gave them a once-over with sharp eyes. “Welcome to Gusu,” he said curtly, eyeing Wei Ying with suspicion. “You will adhere to the rules here, no exceptions.”
Wei Ying gave a polite nod but couldn’t help feeling a sense of mischief bubbling beneath his calm exterior. “Of course, Master Lan.”
The introduction ceremony was a formal affair, with disciples from various clans presenting gifts to the Lan clan’s elders. Wei Ying stood with Xiao Xingchen and Shu Shu, observing the proceedings with mild interest.
Just as Wei Ying was about to present his gift—a rare artifact Boa Shan Sanren had entrusted to him—the air shifted. Wen Chao, the arrogant heir of the Wen sect, made his entrance with a sneer.
“Ah, the famous Wei Ying,” Wen Chao said, his voice dripping with disdain. “I’ve heard stories about you. Practicing strange techniques, aren’t you?”
Wei Ying’s eyes narrowed, but he kept his expression calm. He could feel the resentment radiating off Wen Chao, thick and oppressive, but it had no effect on him.
Before Wen Chao could continue, Wei Ying stepped forward, his presence overwhelming the room. His eyes met Wen Chao’s, and for a moment, there was silence.
“You should be careful what you say,” Wei Ying warned quietly, his voice carrying an edge of danger. “Your father’s reputation may not be enough to protect you.”
Wen Chao’s sneer faltered, and he took an involuntary step back. The room fell into an uneasy silence as the tension between the two hung in the air.
But Wei Ying said no more. He simply turned back to the Lan elders and presented his gift, leaving Wen Chao standing frozen, his face pale with fear.
