Aze sat on the chair, staring straight ahead with bored eyes at the familiar face of his one and only best friend. Heaving a deep sigh, he rolled his eyes to the side.
"How many times are we gonna revise the plan? We've been at this for two hours straight!"
"You think I want this to drag on any longer? You're the one who keeps adding some—" Fang quoted annoyingly, making air quotes with his fingers, "—'dramatic flair'."
"Ugh, I understand the gist of it," Aze finished.
Fang on the screen just closed all the windows and continued to sip his coffee in peace. "I guess you'd prefer to hang out with your new friends instead."
Aze straightened up, smirking playfully. "I smell jealousy."
"Like hell I would be!" Fang retorted. "I just noticed you rarely bother me these days since you met those guys, and I said it was a nice change."
"Are you saying I'm annoying?" Aze pouted.
"That's not what I meant, but yes, you are," Fang snickered, knowing Aze couldn't do anything about it. It was fun teasing someone who got riled up so easily. Aze rolled his eyes again and huffed, folding his arms across his chest.
"It would be nice to know who they are—" Fang continued.
"No!" Aze quickly interrupted.
A tsking sound was heard from the screen, and Aze felt a little bad for not telling his best friend anything. But it was a procedure that both of them understood all too well.
Looking at Aze's guilty look, Fang spoke with a light smile, "I know... it's a big risk to reveal any information about your mission. It's your rule and I respect that."
"I still feel bad sometimes... I just made new friends but I can't share anything with you."
He nodded in understanding. "We've been through this thousands of times already. Although every time, I never stopped being curious." He rolled his eyes playfully.
"And yet you still be friends with me," Aze smiled fondly, though he didn't look directly at the screen. Instead, he chose to focus on the metal wall of the hidden library room.
"Say, Fang, why'd you still help me?"
"You mean with information seeking and stuff?" Fang was silent for a few seconds before avoiding Aze's gaze on the screen. His expression was unreadable, but there was a glint of sadness in his red eyes.
Aze waited, giving his best friend time to come up with an answer.
Steadily, Fang looked back at the screen, his eyes meeting Aze's orange hues in a serious contact. "I don't know what you did for me back then, but I'll do anything to help you, Aze. You're not alone in this, and remember that you still have me. Always."
Aze surely didn't expect that answer. He could feel the heat creeping up his neck and cheeks, avoiding the fond look that Fang rarely showed. It was a vulnerable moment for someone like him.
Showing emotions wasn't his forte, it was supposed to be forbidden. To say that he was lost for words was an understatement. Right at this moment, Aze regretted ever asking that question and wondered how things escalated to that topic anyway. He didn't want to talk about that.
Sensing the turmoil in his friend's reaction, Fang chose to be kind instead, "I guess I won't be able to help you on this mission. I'll be busy with the date."
"I never asked for your help during the mission anyway," Aze replied with a bored tone. But at least the distressing feeling was lifted from his chest. "What are you planning for the date?"
