Her heels clicking on the floor as she walked down the hall furiously, dressed in a designer pant suit catching the eye of all her male coworkers and the glare of her female coworkers. Always the best dressed but it wasn't her outfits that made her so successful. It was her mouth.

The way she could argue in any courtroom and win her case. The way she wasn't scared to go against some of the best lawyers in the world. Talk to a group of jurors and persuade them to be on her side. She was good at what she did.

Usually she defended the innocence.

But today for some reason, sitting in her email, was a case file against one of the worst serial killers in the country.

Far from innocent.

Two steps away from reaching the devils door.

"What the fuck is this?!" Came out of her mouth as she stepped into her boss's office. He sighed and removed the glassed from his face, looking up at her.

"Your case,"

"What makes you think I'mma just represent one of the worst serial killers of this generation?" She questioned setting her briefcase down and flipping through the file she had printed out. "65 murders in all fifty fucking states. Gruesome might I add. Have you seen these pictures? Nobody thinks he's innocent!"

Her boss leaned back in his chair, expression unreadable as he steepled his fingers together. "Exactly," he said, voice calm and measured. "Nobody thinks he's innocent. But that's not why he needs you."

She blinked, her anger bubbling just beneath the surface, waiting to erupt. "What are you talking about? If everyone knows he's guilty, why in the hell would I waste my time defending him?"

"Because it's not about guilt or innocence this time. It's about the system," he said, rising from his chair. "This case is about showing the world that even someone like him, someone everyone loathes, deserves the right to a fair trial. And you, more than anyone, have the reputation to handle this. You're the best."

Her mouth twisted in disbelief, but she couldn't deny the weight of his words. The best. She was. And this case? It wasn't about the killer; it was about what she stood for.

She slammed the file shut. "I'm not making any promises," she said through clenched teeth.

"You don't have to. Just win." He smiled coldly.

"I can't win if I don't even know where he's at."

"It's an undisclosed location. Can't be put out to the public because well...safety reasons."
