"What were you thinking?"
"You told me not to think!"

San Diego California, Fightertown U.S.A 2023

Rays of yellow were fighting their way between the heavy darkness, trying to conquer the sky, tall mountains were watching from below, waiting to be blessed with the twilight's light. The jet's engine was the only one talking with the sky, while Rooster was preparing to land, this time back in San Diego. He hated landing, coming back to ground, when he could stay in the air to admire the marvelous views, yet this time he was impatiently flying closer to the ground. The sad feeling was soon replaced with happiness and nervousness, thinking about what was waiting for him down there or rather who was waiting. Grazing over the concrete he eventually landed fully. Turning the jet in order to bring it to a stop in its garage he finally saw him.

He was considerable shorter than Rooster, yet his attitude never showed him to feel inferior. Maverick was wearing his well-known leather jacket, leaning on his wife's Porche, waiting for Rooster to stop the engine and get out.

"What were you thinking?" were the first words addressed to Rooster.

"You told me not to think!" the response came shortly after, accompanied with laughter, as the two of them hugged.

"How is our project going?"

"I'm perfectly fine, I appreciate your concern, also, thank you for asking how my family is" Maverick's response came.

"Come on Mav, it's been only a week since we last saw each other." Rooster was quick to defense.

"A lot can happen in a week, for instance since we last saw, I managed to finish fixing the plane."

"The old man is back at it I see" said Rooster while he opened the gates.

"Boy, I'd been in a plane way longer before you were born. This was your old man's and my favorite way to go to bed". Maverik's reply had them both laughing.

The two entered the garage filled with planes and went straight to the angriest looking one. Black metal shined in now's morning light. Rooster looked at it, went around it, twice, and only after he analyzed every piece, that once rested on the floor, he finally took his place in Maverick's right with a content look plastered on his face.

"So, faster than light speed?" came Rooster's question, who was still in doubt.

"How about a test to confirm or deny? Two of the best pilots out there, sure will be a record."

"C'mon man, I just landed, give me some time to start my day with a coffee perhaps." Rooster was complaining, hoping to get a coffee.

"Then this beauty will have to wait until dusk. Come on let's get you your so wished coffee."
