Zhao Yang, veiled, stood outside the princess's residence but was stopped.

The guards at the door seemed to have been replaced by new recruits. If it were people brought by Old Liu, they would recognize her immediately, even through her veil.

Although Zhao Yang was well-known, very few could actually call her by name—this was partially due to her status and her tendency to keep to herself.

“Who are you?” The guard, noticing Zhao Yang’s noble demeanor, unconsciously swallowed the reprimand he had prepared.

She had been transferred here a month ago and knew that the situation in the residence was under the control of the weak-witted Eunuch Xin Zhu, especially since Prince Jin had left. Generally, there was no one who visited.

Zhao Yang hadn’t brought Shuwen with her. As soon as she returned, she had dispatched Shuwen to handle official business. Now, Shuwen was busy and unable to leave, so Zhao Yang intended to come see Xin Zhu alone.

Zhao Yang slipped a jade pendant from her sleeve. Upon seeing the pendant, the guard thought to himself that it appeared to be of even better quality than the ones worn by the adults he had seen.

However, the guard was simply impressed by the quality of the pendant. He didn’t recognize it and sternly asked, “May I ask if you have an invitation?”

Zhao Yang sighed helplessly in her heart, retracting the jade pendant. “Is Old Liu here?”

The guard froze momentarily upon hearing the title. “Chief Liu is not currently at the residence.”

“Then go inform him that Xin Zhu is looking for him,” Zhao Yang replied, furrowing her brow. “Tell him it’s important.”

The guard frowned as well. “Eunuch Xin Zhu often worships and spends his time in the ancestral hall and generally doesn’t permit anyone to disturb him. If there’s nothing urgent, please return.”

Upon hearing this, Zhao Yang could only remain silent, pondering how she could enter her own home. This was truly an aggravating dilemma.

“Chief Liu is on duty every night. Perhaps you could come back in the evening?”

The guard thought that perhaps this young lady knew Chief Liu, and since her status was obviously not ordinary, it would be wise to appease her rather than offend someone of her caliber.

Zhao Yang nodded and turned to leave, not making things difficult for the guard. However, as she was walking away, the guard felt that the woman had looked at him with a strange gaze, and he nervously swallowed.

Zhao Yang didn’t actually walk too far; instead, she found a spot by a weakly guarded wall. Having lived in the princess's residence for many years, she was naturally familiar with the surroundings. She never expected that this familiarity would now serve to help her sneak back into her own home.

Zhao Yang’s lightness of foot was exceptional. With a light push of her toes, she scaled the wall and quickly jumped down. In a few agile movements, she made her way to the ancestral hall where Xin Zhu often spent his time.

The spacious princess's residence was cold and quiet, with hurried servants moving about silently.

The area around the ancestral hall was especially desolate, devoid of even a single servant, so quiet that one could hear their own heartbeat.

Slowly, she pushed the door open.

“Xin Zhu.”

Xin Zhu had been sitting with his eyes closed in deep contemplation when he suddenly opened them wide at the sound of Zhao Yang’s voice, looking toward her.
