Jake sat on the steps of the school, his heart heavy with guilt. He had heard from Sunghoon about how much they had hurt Sunoo, and the thought of it gnawed at him. They had been friends for so long, and now it felt like everything was falling apart.
"Hey," Jake said softly, approaching Sunoo, who was leaning against the wall, staring at the ground. Sunghoon stood a few steps away, observing quietly, sensing the tension in the air.
"Why did you come?" Sunoo muttered, still refusing to meet Jake's gaze.
"Because I realized I messed up," Jake replied, taking a step closer. "I want to apologize. I should have believed you."
Sunoo finally looked up, anger and hurt mixing in his eyes. "You should have. You just went along with everything Eunjin said. You didn't even ask me!"
"I know," Jake said, his voice earnest. "I was wrong. I let her words get to me. But I want to make it right. We've been best friends for years. I don't want to lose that."
Sunoo's expression softened slightly, but doubt still lingered. "You don't get to just come back like nothing happened."
"I'm not trying to," Jake said, desperation creeping into his tone. "I just want you to know I'm here for you, and I believe you."
As they spoke, Eunjin appeared from the corner of the school, her expression brightening when she spotted Jake. "Oh, Jake! I've been looking for you!" she called, striding over with an overly cheerful demeanor. "Did you see what I posted? Everyone's been so supportive of me."
Sunoo rolled his eyes, feeling the familiar irritation rise within him. "Cut the act, Eunjin," he snapped, unable to contain his frustration any longer. "You know what you did."
Eunjin feigned innocence, tilting her head. "What do you mean? I just wanted to help!"
"Help? You made everything worse!" Sunoo shouted, his voice echoing off the walls.
Jake, feeling the tension escalate, decided to take a stand. He reached into his pocket, pulling out the matching keychains he had cherished since elementary school. "You think this is a joke?" he asked Eunjin, anger boiling inside him. "You think you can just ruin our friendship and walk away? No more of your lies."
With a swift motion, Jake threw the keychains into the mud right in front of her. "You're not worth keeping this anymore," he said, his voice steady.
Eunjin's eyes widened in disbelief, a mix of anger and humiliation flooding her features. "You're being so haughty just because you had a little glow-up! Any guy could do that, Jake. How pathetic and desperate you always were, and always will be!" she shot back, her facade cracking.
Before she could continue, Sunoo, filled with righteous anger, pushed her. Eunjin stumbled backward, falling directly into the mud, the shock evident on her face.
Sunoo couldn't help it; he burst out laughing, the sound ringing out like music. Eunjin's face turned crimson as she scrambled to get up, her pride shattered. Tears pooled in her eyes as she felt the embarrassment wash over her.
"Guess that's what you get for being a fake," Sunoo said, his voice laced with triumph. He took out his phone, snapping a selfie with her in the background, covered in mud. He posted it immediately, a gleeful smile spreading across his face.
"Let's go!" Jake urged, grabbing Sunoo's hand. Sunghoon fell in step beside them as they dashed away, knowing the teachers would be coming soon.
As they ran, Sunoo glanced back at Eunjin, who was still sitting in the mud, her mask completely off. For the first time in days, he felt lighter, the burden of betrayal easing as he ran with his friends by his side.
"Thanks for sticking up for me," Sunoo said to Jake, feeling a bond rekindle between them.
"Always," Jake replied, grinning. "No one messes with my best friend."
Sunghoon nodded, a satisfied smile creeping onto his face. The trio raced through the hallways, laughter ringing out as they left the chaos behind, their friendship stronger than ever.
