~Raya~
"Order is up!!" the chef announced.
"I got it," I blurted out, carrying the platter of food to table nine. It was bit crowded at this time of the day. It was the usual clientele consisting of teenagers and college-goers that frequented our diner, due to its proximity to the local university and low prices.
"Thanks, Raya," the other end replied with a smile.
"Gee, could you please pick up the T-20? looks like a very sticky customer," said Kate with a pleading look in her eyes. I smiled as I rushed to the table.
I recognize Kate's pleading gaze. I've seen that look on her before and am aware of the consequences if she isn't rescued. Kate has been my best friend since she first came to live with us from Denver. We were both ten back then. Except for her troubles with Kieth, everyone at my house adores her. Kate may be all a girlfriend could wish for; faithful, loving, willing to kill for you and hide the body with you. But she has a temper of glass that is ready to break at the slightest knock.
By some miracle, her sixth sense often warns her off the people. It is not that she will be in danger, but that they will be. And I am the savior to pull her out of it and save them of her wrath. Currently that is table 20.
"I need extra sauce and make it fast" the lady at t-20 demanded. No barked. It sounded more like barking. I nodded while plastering on a practiced smile. I placed the order and replaced the napkins at a few tables. Served a few more orders before winding up for the day. I grabbed my jacket and bag from the locker when I saw Kate already on her toes towards the exit.
"Hey! hurry. We must get ready and arrive before your brother's!!" Kate said.
Indeed! Brother's! Four at that. And I am the unexpected baby at home. Garette and Ken were the oldest of my brothers, while Kieth and Michael are the twins. However, they differ greatly from one another in terms of looks and nature. My mom came from Vienna, leaving her big family behind. My father claimed that she desired a big family with many kids so that she would always feel at home. She was successful in doing so. Only for her to abandon us all when I was seven years old.
It is no joke to have four alpha males at home who are fiercely protective of me and fend off any male attention I could seek. It seems miserable for the human world, but our world is not for humans. We are shifter wolves. We run in packs and live with them like a big family. It is different than the human world, though we live so close to them. Only a small percentage of humanity knows we exist, and even fewer realize we won't be participating in their daily lives.
I jumped into my old car and drove to the packhouse. We arrived at a sizable iron gate that the pack's enforcers or warriors were watching over. Those are the group of wolves in the pack trained for combat and guarding. Intuitively, they are able to detect the scent of any supernatural being from great distances.
We entered the territory that spans for miles together. For human eyes, it is unguarded land, but keen wolf senses know that the entire territory is guarded and patrolled. The whole territory looks green till your eyes reach with tall acacia trees filling the space, here and there. Until it blocks the view of the pack house and is existence. The tall white building looks worn out but is modernly suited in the inside.
I turned the car left from the building a little down, to my house. A two-story building, that is more worn out than the pack house, but it has its history and glamour. We hastily entered the house and stashed our belongings in our rooms. We are in a mad dash to finish putting on our dresses, sandals, and makeup.
As Kate struggled with her outfit choices, I grabbed my clothes and headed to the bathroom. She questioned, turning to face me, "Which one? dark green or blue? ". She is a beautiful brunette with a pale complexion and almond-shaped, black eyes. She radiates a golden glow in every natural hue. I said, "Dark green." She smiled and accepted it.
I've already made up my mind. Black. Most of my wardrobe is, it accentuates my sharp facial features and olive skin tone better than any other shades. We prepared and bolted for the packhouse. The house was already full, with music and food. Oh, If I have not mentioned earlier, Its party at the pack house. One of those annual gatherings, inviting the neighboring packs and harboring the diplomatic relationship.
At the end of the hall, I spotted my brother sporting khaki pants and a turquoise shirt. His tall physique and intense gaze can never be missed in any crowd. His presence speaks authority and respect. Even though most people wouldn't assume we're siblings based on our looks, our shared noses beg to differ. He turned his gaze and mouthed 'late'. I rolled my eyes and pulled Kate over to the buffet.
Though my brother is usually fine with me being late, but not an Alpha. Yes! My brother - Garette is also the alpha of my pack - the Blue Water Pack. My brother took reigns of leadership from my father two years ago, when dad announced retirement. Even though, Alpha Donovan finds it difficult to understand the notion of it. Kate & I grabbed the plates and were filling the food when I felt big hands land on my shoulders.
"Escaping, are we?" I know that voice. I turned to meet the owner of that voice, towering over me with his broad shoulder and smoldering look. His build is made to strike fear in anyone, as he often spends his time in boxing rings. Despite sharing a name with the Ken from the Barbie song, my second eldest brother Ken shuns color and prefers to don all black attire. He is the chattiest of all four and often tasked to reprimand me and Kate.
Kate rolled her eyes. "Whatever ".
" Raya?" said Ken. I shrunk in my place and said in a low voice "I just got late at diner by 10 min; please don't bring it up to anyone, especially not dad, and support me." He crossed his arms over his chest and furrowed his brows with a smirk and said, " What do I get? ". I am well aware of the end of this conversation. Although he may be the ferocious beta, he has a fondness for my coconut cookies. And most of his blackmailing attempts end with him stuffed with them.
" This weekend, I'll bake two batches of coconut cookies for you. just for you!!." he grinned broadly, giving me a nod. He looked at Kate, lifting his brows. " I'll do your turn of dishes for three days " she said with a gloomy face. He seemed satisfied and left us.
I didn't meet the other two of my brothers for the night. Kate & I filled our stomachs before running away from the packhouse to the lake. Yes! OK, there is a lake in our territory that has the forest surrounding it. We enjoy having campfires near the lake, under the moonlight. Most people who attend these gatherings also frequent the area around the lake. There are benches there and lightings, so they may relax and take in the atmosphere.
We both ran unnoticed and lay on the other side of the lake, lying on the grass. Our favorite thing to do is gaze up at the moon and star lit sky. "You need to talk to Uncle Donovan if we want to make it to that trip," Kate said, stuffing her mouth. I know that, but most of my courage drains out at the thought of my brothers and their bickering around me. They might not let me go for this trip. But I had to seize the opportunity; otherwise, I won't ever get to see this world. For a long time, I had fantasized about exploring the human world. Unguarded.
