The cool, dimly lit lab buzzed softly with the sounds of humming machinery and the tapping of keyboards. You had been visiting Alphys regularly since she'd helped you navigate the Underground. At first, your visits were to learn more about the technology and experiments she worked on, but as time passed, you found yourself drawn to her for reasons beyond just science.

Alphys was working diligently at her computer when you walked in. She hadn't noticed you yet, her eyes glued to the screen as she typed furiously. You smiled, watching her for a moment. Her yellow scales glistened slightly in the soft light of the lab, and her lab coat was a little too big, giving her an endearing, clumsy look.

"Hey, Alphys." you called out gently, not wanting to startle her.

She jumped anyway, turning in her chair to see you standing there. "O-Oh! H-Hi!" she stammered, her cheeks flushing pink as she adjusted her glasses. "I didn't hear you, c-come in."

"Sorry about that." you said, walking over to her desk. "I didn't mean to sneak up on you."

She fidgeted with her hands, clearly flustered, but a small smile tugged at her lips. "N-No, it's okay! I-I'm just... in the middle of some recalculations." She gestured vaguely toward the screen, though it was obvious she was happy to see you. "Did you n-need something?"

"Not really." you said, leaning against the desk casually. "I just thought I'd stop by and see how you were doing. Haven't seen you in a while."

Alphys blinked, her eyes widening a bit behind her glasses. "Oh! R-Really? I mean, uh, th-that's nice of you." She glanced down at her feet, clearly flattered but unsure of how to respond. "I-I've been, um, busy with all these experiments and... uh, you know, royal scientist stuff."

You nodded, understanding her nervousness. Alphys was brilliant, but she always had trouble accepting compliments or attention. That was one of the things you found endearing about her- she was incredibly smart, but never boastful. In fact, she was probably her own worst critic.

"I figured." you said, leaning in a little closer to her. "But don't work too hard. You've gotta take breaks, too."

She glanced up at you quickly, her cheeks turning an even deeper shade of pink. "O-Oh! I-I do, I promise! B-But there's just... s-so much to do, you know? And I- I don't want to f-fall behind."

Gently, you placed your hand on her shoulder. The contact made her freeze for a second, but she didn't pull away. "Alphys, you're doing great. You don't have to overwork yourself to prove that."

Her eyes softened, and she gave you a small, shy smile. "Th-Thanks. I... I guess I just w-worry too much. About everything."

You squeezed her shoulder gently before pulling your hand away. "That's because you care. But it's okay to care about yourself, too."

For a moment, there was a comfortable silence between you. Alphys fidgeted a little, still a bit flustered by your words, but she seemed more at ease now. After a few moments, she shifted nervously in her chair, clearly wanting to say something but hesitating.

"Um... c-can I ask you something?" she mumbled, twirling a strand of her lab coat in her fingers.

"Of course." you said, leaning a little closer to show you were listening.

She took a deep breath, her eyes darting around the room as if looking for an escape. "D-Do you... I mean, why do you come to visit me? I-I know you've got better things to do than hang around m-me."

You blinked, surprised by her question. "Why wouldn't I visit you? I enjoy spending time with you."

Alphys's eyes widened in shock. "R-Really? You... you actually like b-being here?"

"Yeah." you said with a smile. "I like being here. I like hanging out with you."

Her face flushed again, and she looked down at her feet, clearly flustered. "I-I... I never thought anyone would... w-want to hang out with me. I'm just... not that interesting."

You shook your head and, in a small moment of boldness, gently reached out and took her hand. Alphys stiffened for a moment, clearly surprised by the gesture, but then relaxed, her fingers nervously curling around yours.

"You're more interesting than you think." you said softly. "You've got a lot going for you, Alphys. You just have to believe it."

Alphys looked up at you, her eyes filled with uncertainty but also a glimmer of hope. "I... I guess I just... I don't know how to see myself that way."

You squeezed her hand gently. "You don't have to figure it out all at once. Just take it one step at a time. And if you ever need someone to remind you how amazing you are, I'll be here."

For a moment, Alphys didn't say anything. She simply stared at you, as if trying to process what you had just said. Then, slowly, her lips curled into a soft smile.

"Th-Thank you." she whispered, her voice barely audible. "That... that really means a lot."

You smiled back, your heart warming at the sight of her finally starting to relax. "Anytime."

The two of you sat there for a while, hands still loosely intertwined, neither of you in a hurry to move. It was a quiet, comforting moment- one that reminded you of the deep connection you had formed with her. It wasn't about grand gestures or dramatic confessions. It was about being there for each other, even in the smallest ways.

After a while, Alphys cleared her throat awkwardly, her face still a bit flushed. "Um, s-so, would you... would you like to see some of the new experiments I've been working on? I-I mean, if you're interested..."

You chuckled softly. "I'd love to."

And as Alphys eagerly started explaining her latest projects, you couldn't help but feel grateful for the time you spent with her. She might be shy and unsure of herself, but to you, she was one of the most remarkable people in the Underground.
