The echo of splashing water filled the cavern as you made your way through Waterfall. It was always peaceful here- calm, serene- but today, you weren't here to take in the sights. You were on your way to visit Undyne.
You had gotten to know her pretty well since you started living in the Underground. At first, she was intimidating, what with her fierce personality and warrior spirit, but over time, you'd come to see the side of her that not many others did-the one that valued loyalty and camaraderie. The one who, despite her tough exterior, cared deeply for her friends.
The sound of loud grunts and splashing grew louder as you approached her usual training spot. Sure enough, there she was, in the middle of an intense workout, tossing spears with pinpoint accuracy into a set of targets lined up against the cave wall. Her blue skin shimmered with sweat, and her eye narrowed in focus, the red one covered with an eyepatch.
You stood at the edge of the clearing, not wanting to interrupt her training. Instead, you watched as she threw her final spear, piercing the bullseye dead center. She let out a triumphant laugh, clearly pleased with her performance.
"Nice shot." you called out, stepping forward.
Undyne whirled around at the sound of your voice, a wide grin spreading across her face. "Hey! You made it!" she said, her voice loud and full of energy. She marched over to you, her presence commanding as always. "I was just warming up! What's up?"
"Not much." you replied with a smile. "Figured I'd stop by and see what you were up to."
"Training, obviously!" she said, gesturing to the targets with pride. "Gotta stay sharp! You never know when you'll need to throw down, right?"
You chuckled. "Fair point. You always seem ready for a fight."
"Damn right!" she said, puffing out her chest. "A warrior's gotta be prepared. But..." She paused, crossing her arms and giving you a thoughtful look. "Since you're here, how about a sparring match?"
You blinked, surprised by the offer. "Sparring? With you?"
Undyne's grin only widened. "What, scared you can't keep up?" she teased, giving you a playful nudge.
You laughed nervously, knowing full well that Undyne could probably wipe the floor with you if she wanted to. "I'm not sure I'm quite at your level yet."
She waved a hand dismissively. "Aw, don't worry! I'll go easy on you... mostly." She winked, clearly enjoying the idea of a challenge. "C'mon! It'll be fun!"
Before you could object, she grabbed your arm and pulled you toward the open area, her enthusiasm contagious. You couldn't help but laugh at her energy, even as you wondered what you had just gotten yourself into.
"Alright." you said, rolling your shoulders in preparation. "But don't hold back too much. I've been practicing, you know."
Undyne smirked, her eye gleaming with excitement. "That's the spirit! Let's see what you've got!"
The next few minutes were a whirlwind of movement. Undyne was fast- faster than you expected- but she wasn't going full force, giving you a chance to keep up. You dodged, blocked, and even managed to land a few light hits, though it was clear who the real warrior was.
"Not bad!" Undyne said as she parried one of your moves with ease. "You're getting better!"
You grinned, feeling a little proud of yourself despite being on the defensive most of the time. "Thanks. I've been watching your moves."
She laughed, clearly pleased by the compliment. "Good! Maybe you'll give me a real challenge someday!"
After a few more rounds, she called the sparring match to an end. Both of you were panting lightly, though Undyne barely seemed tired. She wiped her brow and gave you an approving nod.
"Not bad at all." she said, clapping you on the shoulder. "You've got potential."
"Coming from you, I'll take that as a high compliment." you said, still catching your breath.
She smiled, the fierce look in her eye softening slightly. "It is. You keep working like that, and you'll be a real fighter one day. But you gotta push yourself, alright? No giving up."
You nodded, knowing how seriously Undyne took the concept of determination. It was one of the things you admired most about her. No matter how tough things got, she never quit.
"I will." you said. "Thanks for the training. It was... actually a lot of fun."
Undyne beamed, clearly happy to hear that. "Hell yeah, it was! Anytime you wanna spar, just let me know. I'm always up for a good fight."
As the adrenaline from the sparring session started to wear off, you both sat down by the water's edge, enjoying the peaceful sounds of the waterfall. It was a stark contrast to the intensity of your training just moments before.
"You know." Undyne said after a while, her voice more thoughtful now, "it's nice to hang out like this. Most people are too scared to get close to me, or they just see me as some crazy warrior chick."
You looked over at her, surprised by the vulnerability in her words. "I don't think that at all. I mean, yeah, you're tough, but you're more than that."
She gave a small, appreciative smile, looking down at the water. "Thanks. Sometimes, I guess I forget that. It's easy to get caught up in all the fighting and training. But, uh... it's nice to have someone around who doesn't mind that about me."
You gently placed your hand over hers, feeling the cool, smooth surface of her scales beneath your palm. She stiffened for a moment, clearly not used to the gesture, but she didn't pull away.
"I'm glad to be that person for you." you said softly.
Undyne turned to look at you, her expression unreadable for a moment. Then, she gave you a rare, soft smile- one that was far gentler than her usual fierce grins.
"Thanks." she said quietly. "That means a lot."
The two of you sat there for a while longer, hands still touching, neither of you in a rush to move. It wasn't often that Undyne let herself slow down and just relax, but you were glad to be there when she did.
Eventually, she let out a long, satisfied breath and stood up, pulling you up with her. "Alright, enough of that mushy stuff." she said with a playful grin. "Next time, you're going down!"
You laughed, shaking your head. "We'll see about that, Undyne."
But as she threw her arm around your shoulder and led you back toward town, you couldn't help but feel a deep sense of connection with her. Undyne might have been fierce and relentless, but beneath it all, she was a true friend- loyal, brave, and someone you were lucky to know.
"Just you wait!" she shouted, already planning your next sparring session. "Next time, I'll show you some real moves!"
And with Undyne by your side, you knew life would never be boring.
