The sun dipped low in the sky, casting long shadows across the big house they shared togheter. The familiar feeling of mismatched furniture, stacks of band posters, and music equipment created a beautiful home for their lives. Johnnie, with his jet black hair draping over his blue eyes, sat hunched on the couch, quietly playing on his guitar, the melancholic notes filling the silence.

Jake, on the other hand, was perched on the kitchen counter, a wide grin plastered on his face as he scrolled through his phone. He was texting this girl he had started talking to a couple weeks back, they had met at a party he went to somewhere in LA.

"Hey, man! You won't believe this!" Jake exclaimed, his voice a pitch higher with excitement. He hopped off the counter and rushed over, practically bouncing on his feet. Johnnie kept playing but lifted his head to look over at Jake. "Lily texted me! We're hanging out at her's tomorrow!"

Johnnie's fingers froze over the strings. "Oh. That's... cool, I guess," he replied, his voice lacking the enthusiasm Jake's clearly expected. He forced a smile, but it fell short and faded quickly as Jake's eyes danced with joy.

"What's the matter? You're not happy for me?" Jake raised an eyebrow, concern creeping into his playful tone.

"No, it's not that..." Johnnie sighed, setting his guitar aside. "It's just... I thought maybe we could hang out, you know, like we used to do. Just the two of us."

Jake scratched the back of his head, his expression a mix of surprise and guilt. "We can! I mean, it's just one day, right? But Lily is really great, Jon. She likes punk music, loves to skate, and she even knows a few of the bands we like!" He said in a happy tone.

Johnnie clenched his jaw, the jealousy simmering beneath the surface stronger than he wanted. "Yeah, but when was the last time we did something together? We used to be inseparable, Jake."

"Hey," Jake stepped closer, his voice softening. "Dude, it's just a phase. She and I are just... hanging out. It doesn't change anything between us. You know that, right?"

"Do I?" Johnnie countered, trying to keep his tone light but feeling the weight of his insecuritys. "It just feels like you're shifting. Like... I'm losing you."

Jake paused, running a hand through his black hair. "Losing me? Johnnie, come on! You're my best friend. I didn't bring Lily into our lives to replace you. You know I need both, right?" Jake said as he sat down besides Johnnie on the couth.

"Do you?" Johnnie's eyes flashed, revealing the frustration he often concealed. "It's just... things feel different now. You're always texting her, always going out with her. I just wish I didn't feel like an afterthought."

With a sigh, Jake shifted his position, considering his words carefully. "I get it. But I promise, she's not taking your place. You're a big part of my life, and this doesn't have to change anything. How about we compromise? I'll invite her over, and you can hang with us. You might even like her!"

Johnnie felt his heart soften slightly at the offer but was still reluctant. "I don't know, Jake. What if im to weird? What if she doesn't like me?"

Jake chuckled lightly, the familiar warmth returning to his features. "She'll love you, man! Everyone loves you. You're great once you get out of your shell. We're a package deal, remember?"

The corners of Johnnie's lips tugged upwards, though uncertainty still danced in his chest. "I guess it wouldn't hurt to try..."

"That's the spirit!" Jake exclaimed, throwing an arm around Johnnie's shoulders, pulling him into a side hug. "I'll set it up. Just give her a chance, okay? Who knows, she might be your new best friend too."

As Jake chattered on about his plans, Johnnie listened, feeling the warmth of their friendship wrap around him. For all the worry and jealousy, he realized that Jake's excitement about Lily didn't overshadow what they had. It simply meant he was expanding his world.

And if that meant stepping out of his comfort zone, maybe it was time for Johnnie to embrace the changes coming his way, one shadow at a time.
