As days blurred into weeks, the dynamic that was between Shinobu and Giyu began to shift in subtle, yet unmistakable ways. What had started as a calculated ploy on Shinobu's part—an attempt to toy with the seemingly unbreakable 'Mr Perfect'—had evolved into something far more complicated. She found herself thinking about Giyu at off times throughout the day, replaying their conversations in her mind and smiling at things that she wouldn't normally pay attention to before.
It was in the small moments, really. The way Giyu would pause after explaining relatively difficult concept to understand, as if gauging whether she was following, the way he quietly cleared his throat before answering a difficult question, or even the dry, almost sarcastic humour that slipped through his otherwise stoic exterior. Shinobu found herself laughing at his remarks, even when he hadn't realised that he said something funny. His wit was subtle, easily missed if you didn't pay attention, however Shinobu had always been a good observer.
Giyu, for his part, remained quiet and reserved, yet there was no denying that he had begun changing too. He was starting to soften around her. Their study sessions were no longer purely academic. Sometimes, they would spend the first few minutes in a comfortable silence, then drift into casual conversation about school, their peers, or their pasts. Shinobu began to learn more about him—not just about his dedication to his studies, but about the depth of his quiet strength, about the struggles he never spoke about but which clearly drove him.
It was becoming clear that Giyu wasn't just an excellent student—he was also someone who carried around a quiet weight, a sense of responsibility that shaped everything he did. Shinobu admired that about him, more than she expected. It was a quality that she often never saw in people, especially in her world, where recklessness and rebellion ruled.
But while Shinobu found herself drawn to Giyu's calm, Giyu had also began to feel the allure of Shinobu's world. At first it was subtle—the way her stores about life with the kizuki hinted at a kind of freedom that he had never known. The way her eyes lit up when she was telling him about the thrill she felt when bending, sometimes breaking, the rules. The rush of adrenaline, the exhilaration of not caring about what others thought. It was a life completely foreign to Giyu, but as he listened, he couldn't help but feel drawn to it.
One afternoon, during one of their now-regular study sessions, Shinobu leaned back in her chair, stretching lazily as she closed her textbook. "You know," she said, her voice tingled with amusement, "there's more to life than biology and textbooks, Tomioka-san."
Giyu glanced up from his notes, his brow furrowing in a mild confusion. "I know that," he replied, his tone as neutral as ever.
"Do you?" Shinobu teased, her lips curling into a playful smirk. "You ever done something, just for the thrill of it? No reason, no plan—
just because?"Giyu was silent for a moment, his eyes narrowing slightly as he considered her words. Finally, he shook his head. "No, I don't see the point."
Shinobu laughed softly, her gaze lingering on him. "That's because you've never tried it, you're so used to being in control, Tomioka-san. You don't know what it's like to... let go."
Her words stuck with him, more than he cared to admit. That night, as he lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, he found himself thinking about her—about the freedom she seemed to embody, the wild, untamed energy that surrounded her like a storm. For so long Giyu had kept himself tethered to order, to discipline, to the path he believed he needed to follow. But now, for the first time, he wondered if there was more. If maybe, just maybe, that he had been missing out on something.
The next day, Giyu found himself doing something he had never done before, he skipped class.
It wasn't planned, it wasn't thought out—he simply did not go. Instead he found himself at the edge of the school grounds, watching as Shinobu and the other members of the Kizuki gathered under the large oak tree, a place where they usually hung out while classes were on. There was a sense of unease churning in his stomach, a part of him that screamed he was making a mistake. But another part grew louder and louder, ever since he met Shinobu and helped her with studying, that part was telling him, go.
When Shinobu noticed him standing there, a slow smile spread across her face. She waved him over, her eyes gleamed with a tint of pride. "Well, well," she said as he approached, her tone light and teasing. "Look who's finally decided to join us."
Giyu didn't say anything, but the small nod he gave her was all the can she needed. From that moment on, their worlds began to merge.
At first, it was small. Giyu would join Shinobu and her gang during lunch breaks, sitting on the out skirts of the group, quietly observing as they bantered and laughed, the reckless energy of Kizuki swirling around him. He didn't quite fit in, but no one seemed to mind. And to his surprise neither did he. There was something oddly liberating about being in their presence, about being around people who didn't care about people and their expectations. In was chaotic, unpredictable but most of all, it was intoxicating.
Giyu began to skip more classes, spending more and more afternoons with Shinobu and her crew, watching as they pushed boundaries and played with danger. He didn't participate at first, content to stand on the sidelines and observe, but it wasn't long before the thrill of what they were doing slowly began to seep in. The adrenaline, the freedom—it was a rush he had never experienced before, and with each passing day he found himself craving it more each day.
But as Giyu was pulled deeper into Shinobu's world, something curious was happening to Shinobu herself. The more time she spent with Giyu, the more she found herself drawn to the opposite of what she had always known. While Giyu was embracing the chaos of her life, she was beginning to cherish the quiet order they had whenever they studied together. She never realised just how much she needed that peace until Giyu brought it into her life.
One evening, after spending the afternoon together with the other members of Kizuki, they returned to the library to study, as they always did. This time it felt different. The air between them was charged with unspoken tension, a shift in the balance of their relationship that neither of them fully understood.
As they sat across from each other, the silence stretching between them, Shinobu spoke softly, almost absentmindedly. "I never thought I'd actually enjoy this, you know."
Giyu looked up from his notes, his eyes narrowing slightly and his brow furrowing. "Enjoy what?"
Shinobu's lips twitched into a small smile. "This. Us together. Studying, the quiet." She paused, her gaze drifting to the window, where the fading sunlight cast long shadows across the room and them, hiding a subtle but very much there blush on her cheeks. She couldn't bring herself to look at him, his gaze piercing her. "You bring something different into my life, Tomioka-san. Something I don't realise I was missing."
"I guess we're both changing," he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper, before looking back down at his page. He didn't quite know how he felt, he knew he liked the new world he was getting himself involved in, but at the same time he enjoyed these moments with Shinobu, talking to her and spending time with her.
Shinobu noticed the shift in Giyu's demeanour, watching as he carries on his studies, he didn't go over them as much anymore, they've done enough and they found that Shinobu was talented in the subject naturally. "Yeah," she murmured to herself. "Maybe we are," a hint of sincerity about also a hint of sadness, she brought Giyu away from this life she was loving, that he used to love, but now he seems more distracted and less interested.
