Just Some Light Kidnapping

The party after the ceremony was fun. The Scots played music, my parents danced, even Kaeden made me dance with him. He taught me some Scottish jig that I should've known if I'd grown up in Scotland.

Gray kept his distance, only offering small smiles whenever our eyes met. People from the Ridge congratulated us, offering small gifts for our home. "Sláinte mhath." The Scots called. "Congratulations." The British yelled. Everyone was sweet to us, like we'd been family all along.

The party dipped well into the night. The men got drunk, the woman took the children to bed, leaving Kaeden and I to sit off to the side of the fire for a few moments of peace.

"I'm glad ye are my wife." Kaeden whispered, "and ye got married in a dress no less?" I let out a giggle, leaning into him.

"I'm glad you're my husband." I looked over towards my parents. Claire was watching over my nephew while Jamie stood with John Gray, speaking lightheartedly. "I couldn't let my father down by wearing pants. He already believes I'm very unladylike." I chuckled.

"Kaeden, please help me! My husband willna dance with me and I need someone who knows this Scottish dance!" Marsali approached, heaving for air like she'd just run a mile. Kaeden laughed and left with her.

Jamie soon stood before me, his hand out for me. I took it with a smile. We soon joined the dance floor, dancing along to the music. Desperately, I tried not to step on his toes, but I failed with almost every step.

"Ye're supposed to be Scottish! Ye must take after yer mother." Jamie laughed.

"I was raised by a French woman and sea dogs." I responded, laughing with him. Soon the music died down and everyone clapped.

"Where's the Quaich?" A man yelled. It was quickly brought to the center of the growing crowd. Someone poured the dark liquid into the bowl, passing the silver dish to me next.

"You must drink first, then Kaeden is supposed to drink next." Jamie whispered in my ear. I accepted the dish, glancing up at Kaeden who wore a smirk.

"So, I could just not drink any and you must finish it?" I perked an eyebrow. He nodded with a laugh. I took a smaller sip, gripping the dish by both handles, before passing it to him. Kaeden eyed the dish, then me, then tossed the dish back, gulping the remnants of the liquor.

The crowd cheered as Kaeden gripped my waist, pulling me into a heavy kiss. The bagpipes started up again as the dancing resumed. Kaeden led me through another dance this time. Fortunately, it was one I knew from when we were kids. We swung around the dance floor, spinning with each movement of our feet. With each turn, I could see Claire leaning into Jamie's chest. They both looked blissfully happy in that moment. It made me wish that I'd been raised by them. Who I could've been if they'd been there my whole life.

I separated from Kaeden once the music stopped. He went to partake in some drinking game I didn't want any part in. I sat by the fire once more. Claire made her way over to me, finding a spot next to me.

"I'm so proud of you." She stated, taking my hand in hers. "I know we didn't raise you. I would give anything to have raised you. But nonetheless, I am proud of the woman you've become." She smiled. I laid my head on her shoulder.

"Thank you. I wish you had raised me too, but I'm so glad Jamie walked into Murtagh's shop." I smiled, staring at the fire at our feet.

"Oh, your father is getting drunk. I must go." She jumped from her spot before kissing my temple.

The next person approached, taking her spot next to me.

"You look beautiful." John Gray stated.

"Thank you, Lord Gray." I muttered, picking a piece of grass apart between my hands.
