Chapter 3: Lingering

The taste of tequila lingered in Ji Chenxi's mouth, and the abundant pheromones from the other alpha filled his mouth, making him quite uncomfortable for a while.

Why on earth had this humiliating alpha-on-alpha marking technique been passed down through the generations?!

Ji Chenxi ran his tongue over his marking teeth, hoping to dispel the tequila scent, but it only intensified the sensation. The more he tried, the stronger the taste became, making him feel even worse.

Despite his discomfort, Ji Chenxi didn't let any hint of it show, maintaining his composure.

The tequila and rose scents intertwined, fighting with each other until they finally merged into something faintly sweet. However, upon closer inspection, one could still distinguish the two distinct aromas that had been forcibly blended together.

Marking someone for the first time, Ji Chenxi realized that this act wasn't just deeply insulting but also harmful.

If it was this unbearable for him, it must have been far worse for Chi Zhuo, who had taken the brunt of the marking.

As Ji Chenxi took a step back, he first noticed the rapidly swelling gland, then Chi Zhuo's face, twisted in pain as he forced himself to endure it. His eyes burned with malice.

Ignoring his own irritation, Ji Chenxi smiled and asked, "What's with that expression? Didn't you just say you liked me enough to want to mark me? I just granted your wish."

"A misstep," Chi Zhuo's face was cold as ice, and he let out a bitter laugh. "Either kill me today, or one day, I'll make you wish you were dead."

The once overbearing scent of tequila had now mellowed, mixed with the rose pheromones, forming a faintly sweet combination with notes of caramel, honey, and even a slight woody fragrance. The once fiery liquor scent had transformed into something unexpectedly pleasant.

It reminded Ji Chenxi of a scent from his childhood, something he had smelled around his mother.

A momentary daze crossed Ji Chenxi's face before he responded, "Looks like I only have one option, then — to kill you."

Given the series of actions he had just taken, Ji Chenxi had well and truly made an enemy of Chi Zhuo. The best way to avoid being stalked by a vengeful snake in the future would be to eliminate him now, once and for all.

Ji Chenxi wiped the scratch on his face absentmindedly. Initially, he couldn't believe the events in that ridiculous book, but what bothered him more was the idea that he could actually lose to another alpha. Getting rid of this stronger alpha now would be the best strategy, but why did it feel like he had taken advantage of him? Drugging him and securing a small victory, then eliminating him — it felt almost dishonorable.

Honestly, his alpha pride didn't want to let him go through with it.

Wouldn't it be boring to handle it this way?

For Chi Zhuo, being forcibly bitten and marked by another alpha was a great humiliation, but his mind had not fully given in. In fact, the discomfort seemed to sharpen his focus.

The drug had suppressed his abilities, but the instinct of survival and the threat of death had allowed his body to bypass the effects temporarily, giving him a fighting chance.

Chi Zhuo was sure his opponent wouldn't let him go so easily, but what he didn't expect was that Ji Chenxi actually let him go.

Wiping his hands with a handkerchief, Ji Chenxi turned to head back toward the lively banquet hall. Before he had taken a few steps, he felt a sudden attack coming from behind. He raised his mental shield to block it and turned to face Chi Zhuo.
