"You can't hesitate."

"I'm done talking about this."

Nathan scoffed at his father, growing annoyed with how Hershel was acting. Sure Hershel was his father but Nathan wasn't a kid anymore and Hershel just didn't see it.

After last night Nathan had this newfound determination to survive this world. He didn't want Cameron to be right. He wanted to prove he could do it, not only to prove her wrong but to prove it to himself. Nathan was finally realizing he can't stay on this farm forever, even if Hershel thinks otherwise.

"I wasn't asking for your permission."

Hershel looked shocked. Nathan had never used this kind of tone with him before. Ever since he was a kid Nathan has always followed the rules. He always did exactly what was expected of him and never let anyone down. Now here he was, disobeying his father.

"Really?" Herschel gave him a confused look.

Nathan nodded, "I'm nineteen, certainly old enough to make my own choices."

"Certainly," Hershel turned to leave the room and immediately Nathan felt guilty for going against his father.

"If I don't learn I'll die," Nathan said softly, his words making Hershel stop. "They can teach me and if something happens I'll be ready. I'll be able to protect you, Beth, and Maggie." Hershel nodded his head, he hated this but Nathan was right, he's old enough to make his own choices. "Thank you."

Hershel didn't say anything else to his son before he left the room. Even though Nathan felt like shit for going against his father he knew it was the right thing to do. He'd be prepared for what the world has become and he'll get to see a certain deputies' daughter.

"Nate."

The boy turned around when he heard his sister say his name, "Yeah?"

"We're comin' with you to gun training?"

Nathan looked between his sister and Patricia, "What?"

"Dad consented," Beth assured him, knowing how upset Hershel was yesterday when Jimmy helped out the group. "He said we should go with you."

"Right, sure," Nathan nodded, slightly annoyed that his sister got an automatic yes while he had to fight for an okay response. "Let's go then."

Nathan walked ahead of Patricia and his sister. The three of them walked right up to the truck that Jimmy, Shane, Cameron, and Rick were standing around. Cameron was standing by her father, like she always was.
