"The barn's full of walkers."

Nathan hadn't heard it coming. He was so focused on what Cameron was doing that the quiet footsteps behind him went completely unnoticed. In fact he didn't know anything was wrong until Cameron turned around.
A panicked look appeared on her face. Nathan didn't understand. He didn't understand until the low groan of a dead man was right behind him. Nathan turned around, praying that maybe he could outrun it but it was too late. It was right there. It was already pushing Nathan to the ground.
"Cameron!" He cried out in fear.
He heard Cameron yell something but she sounded so far away. Her voice was muffled under the sounds of the dead man trying to kill him. Nathan tried reaching for his knife but when he fell it got knocked out of his hand. For the first time in his life Nathan is face to face with death.
Everything was a blur. Fear coursed through his veins. His eyes filled with tears. His hands trembled.
This was it. This was the end.
His eyes closed waiting for the bite or scratch that'd end it all. He wondered if the bite would kill him instantly. Or maybe Cameron will be the one to do it. He assumed she wouldn't let him turn.
All these thoughts were running through his head. It felt like hours had passed but in reality it was only a few seconds.
Cameron had run over to him. She pulled the Walker off of Nathan and killed it without hesitation. Except Nathan's eyes were still closed. He didn't know what was going on. In his mind, he was already dead.
"Nathan," Cameron had moved beside him now. She put her hand on his shoulder, trying to get him to open his eyes. "It's over. It's dead," She told him but he was still paralyzed with fear. "Did it get you? Are you bit?" She searched his limps for blood but found nothing. "Nathan. Come on."
She pulled him to sit up and that's when he opened his eyes. Without thinking he pushed himself away from her. His heart was pounding and his lungs were working overtime to keep him breathing. He looked from side to side as he remembered where he was.
"Nathan?" Cameron's voice was soft.
He couldn't speak. He turned his head to the side, looking at the dead walker. For the first time Nathan understood. He finally knew why Cameron didn't hesitate to kill them.
"It's dead. It can't hurt you," She told him and Nathan nodded, showing that he'd heard her.
"He was my math teacher..." Nathan told her, his eyes focused on the thing that tried to kill him. "Freshman year algebra."
