"What if you get bit?"
--☆--☆--☆--
Nathan remembers the day he met her like it was yesterday. It was one of those days when you didn't realize how important it was until after the day was over. It started out so simply. If only he knew how badly this would end.
Nathan Greene walked out onto his front porch, a book in his right hand. As soon as he stepped out the door a cool breeze went by, calming some of his nerves. Sometimes he felt trapped in his house, the air reminded him the outside world was still there. His older sister was already outside, she turned around the two of them sharing a quick smile.
"Anything?" Nate asked her but she shook her head. Nothing ever happened on the farm, everything was always the same.
So Nate sat down on the rocking chair and Maggie turned back around, her focus going onto the quiet land in front of them.
Nate opened his book, his focusing going onto the words on the page. Since Nate was a kid he's always been the smartest in his family. He took every advanced class that high school offered and he actually understood what was going on. His brain was supposed to be his ticket off the farm and away from this simple life. But then everything changed and now Nate is stuck on his front porch with his book and his sister.
The two siblings have been outside for twenty minutes now, and everything was fine. Everything was normal. Until something caught Maggie's attention. At first she thought it was nothing, her eyes were playing tricks on her. Maggie picked up her binoculars looking out at the field in front of her. Her heart rate picked up, fear coursing through her veins.
"Dad!" She yelled and Nate nearly fell out of his chair. He composed himself just as Maggie ran back inside. He stood up grabbing the binoculars wanting to know what she saw.
He held them up and looked out at the field. He scanned the area, wondering what caught his sister's attention. When he found it he needed to focus the binoculars at first he thought it was one of those people. He grew scared not knowing what to do if it was one of them. The binoculars finally focused and he realized it wasn't of them, it was a man running straight towards them.
Seconds later Hershel Greene came running out the door, the rest of the family by his side. They stood by the door looking out at the world in front of you. Nate looked over at them, at two his sisters, his father, and his friend Jimmy standing with a baseball bat ready to protect them while he stood there with a book in his hand.
The man kept running towards them and the Greene family looked at him, all of them frozen in panic. As the man got closer they all realized something: the man carrying something. A little boy, unconscious in his arms, the two of them covered in blood.
