The sunlight streaming through her window was the first thing Olive noticed when she woke up. The second, was the feeling of a body pressed against her.
She freaked out for a second before turning to the side and seeing Wren's sleeping face. Her sister looked younger asleep, her wrinkles smoothed out, and the furrow in her brow less sharp.
Olive smiled, rolling onto her side, facing her. She lifted her hand to rest it on Wren's cheek like she used to when she was a little girl.
She slowly began drawing circles on Wren's warm cheek.
Silence for a moment before Wren groaned, one eye slowly opening to look at her.
"Hi."
"Hi. Happy birthday baby."
Olive grinned even wider. Her birthday was today. She was turning 15. Wren woke up fully, shifting so she was also on her side.
"15 years ago," she began and Olive rolled her eyes, already knowing where her sister was going with this, "I was on my way to an audition for Party of Five, when I got this phone call. It was our mother who I-"
"Who you hadn't spoken to in three months." Olive cut in, and Wren laughed, gently pushing Olive's hand off her face.
"Yes I hadn't spoken to her in three months. Stop interrupting me, monkey."
Wren pretended to look confused. "Now where was I?" She asked, and Olive sighed before obliging.
"You received a phone call from Mama."
"Yes," Wren said, pushing a loose strand of hair behind Olive's ear. "I received a phone call from Mom. She was swearing like a sailor and said that she had gone into labour and that I needed to get down to Scripps Coastal, within the next half hour, or Dad wasn't the only Pasqualina she was going to flay alive."
"But you were in LA." Olive added, and Wren nodded.
"I was in LA, and it's an hour and 48 minutes from there to Solana Beach, and that's if traffic is cooperating. But Mom was alone, and she was scared, and Dad didn't have a cell phone yet, so the only way to contact him was the company phone and no one was picking up. And so I called my agent-"
"Robbie. The guy with the ugly mustache who looked like he had been in a 70s porno," Olive added, and Wren snorted at the reminder of how she had described the man. Olive smiled at her, cuddling in closer.
Wren's warmth took over the entire room.
"Yes, Robbie with the porno mustache, and I told him, I'm so sorry there's a family emergency."
Wren stared at Olive for a moment. Not saying a word. Olive looked back at her sister. At her deep brown eyes. At the way her tan skin looked smooth in the early morning light. She felt safe. Like she always did with Wren.
"And he asked me, what's more important? Family? Or your career."
This part of the story always clenched Olive's heart. It was the thesis to her relationship with her sister.
"And you told him, without my family, I have no career." Olive said breathlessly. Her eyes pricked up with tears. Wren smiled at her, leaning forward and kissing Olive on the forehead.
