THE LOYALTY
January 1930
The streets of East London were quiet, but Jackie Ashford wasn't here for peace. He stood surrounded by his most trusted men, waiting for an important meeting.
Tonight wasn't just about his own business. He had decided to bring in some of his wife Elisabeth's people without her knowledge.
Jackie knew this was a risky move. Normally, Elisabeth's alliances operated separately from his, respecting their boundaries even after marriage.
But tonight, the stakes were too high. Word had spread that rival families were planning to challenge the Ashfords' dominance, and Jackie needed to act fast.
It wasn't just his turf on the line. Elisabeth's empire would be threatened too.
"We'll keep this short and sweet, fellas," Jackie said, his voice low but firm as he glanced at the men from Elisabeth's side. "We got business to handle."
One of his men, Leo, leaned in. "Boss, think they’ll go along with it?"
"They don’t have much choice," Jackie replied, his eyes scanning the dimly lit street. "If they don’t play nice, they’ll find themselves in hot water."
The cars finally rolled up, headlights cutting through the fog, their sleek black frames barely visible against the dark streets.
As the doors opened, Jackie recognized some familiar faces stepping out, alongside a new one potential rivals, disguised as allies.
This was no ordinary meeting. It was a negotiation, one that would decide the future of both his and Elisabeth's territories.
Jackie stepped forward, his posture commanding respect. One of the key allies from Elisabeth's side, Martin Russo, approached him.
Martin was known for his loyalty to Elisabeth, but tonight, he was answering Jackie's call.
"Jack, why’d you drag us out here without telling Lisa? What’s the angle?" Martin asked, his voice carrying a hint of suspicion.
"Listen, Martin. This is not about playing nice," Jackie replied, a smirk on his face as his hands tucked into the pockets of his tailored coat. "When trouble’s brewing, you don’t tip off the captain. We do what we gotta do for the family."
Martin exchanged glances with the other men from Elisabeth's camp. He wasn't sure how long Jackie could keep this hidden from her, but for now, they had to play along.
The conversation shifted as the representatives from the rival families approached.
Tension filled the air. These weren't enemies - yet - but they could be if this meeting didn't go as planned.
Jackie was gambling with everything tonight, and one wrong move could turn alliances into open warfare.
"So," Jackie began, his voice steady, "we all know what's at stake. Nobody wants a war on these streets. But let me make this clear: cross into Ashford territory, and you’ll regret it."
