LITTLE BOYThe sun hung low in the sky as Jackie stepped out of the Duesenberg, adjusting his coat against the crisp January breeze.
He had arranged this meeting with Sam for weeks, knowing that if anyone could help him find a boy to adopt, it would be him.
Sam was an expert in navigating London's underground, but he had a soft spot for children in need. Jackie hoped that today, Sam had found the right match.
As Jackie approached, Sam was waiting for him near the orphanage yard, standing a bit off to the side. "Jack," Sam greeted him with a nod, his face serious. "I think I've found someone for you."
Jackie looked at him, curious. "Let's see him, then," he said, his voice low but steady.
Sam motioned toward a group of children playing a short distance away.
Among them was a boy, no older than eight or nine, his laughter blending with the other kids, seemingly unaware of the world around him. "His name's Marc," Sam said quietly, his tone careful. "Marc June. He's been here for many years, ever since his family was wiped out."
Jackie's heart skipped a beat. The name "June" wasn't new to him. He knew the family well, or at least he had known of them.
The June family had been caught in a feud with the Ashford years ago, a rivalry that left the June family all but erased.
Jackie felt guilty, and sympathy bested up inside him. Marc was the last of his line, the lone survivor of a family that his own had helped bring down.
"He doesn't know," Sam added, as if reading Jackie's mind. "About the history. Marc's just a boy, and as far as he's concerned, this is all he's ever known."
Jackie stood still for a moment, watching Marc from a distance. The boy was carefree, chasing after a ball with his friends, his brown hair tousled by the wind.
He seemed happy, oblivious to the dark shadows of his past. There was an innocence about him that tugged at Jackie's chest.
"He's a good kid," Sam said, breaking the silence. "Smart, strong. He'd make a fine heir."
Jackie nodded, unable to tear his gaze away from the boy. The thought of what had happened to Marc's family and the role the Ashford had played made him pause.
Could he take Marc in, knowing the truth? But at the same time, he saw an opportunity to give the boy a future - something better than the streets or the orphanage.
"What do you think?" Sam asked, his voice quiet.
Jackie took a deep breath, his decision already made. "I'll take him," he said softly, eyes still on Marc. "For the sake of my wife. He deserves a chance. He's got nothing left."
