THE SPACES THEY SHARE
Mayfair Academy
The next morning, Jackie stood beside his Duesenberg as he watched Marc just walked out.
Elisabeth was preoccupied with her business dealings, leaving Jackie to handle the morning send-off.
"Marc," Jackie called. "You ready for your second day?"
Marc nodded.
"Remember, it's important to make friends," Jackie urged, his voice firm but encouraging. "The more people you know, the more you can lead. Power comes from connections."
Marc frowned, confusion knitting his brow. "Lead people? But I just want to play football and study."
"Trust me," Jackie said, his tone is serious. "Building a network is crucial. You have to understand how to influence others if you want to succeed."
Silence settled between them, awkward and heavy.
Jackie realized he might be pushing too hard. He glanced at Marc, who looked bewildered, grappling with concepts too advanced for his age.
It reminded him of Elisabeth, who often assumed everyone understood her strategic mindset, forgetting that sometimes, children just needed to be children.
"Uh, just... do your best, alright?" Jackie finally said, breaking the silence, the words feeling clumsy as they left his mouth.
"Okay," Marc replied, his voice is still uncertain. He turned toward the school building.
"Goodbye, Lad," Jackie called after him. "Be good."
"Goodbye," Marc echoed, stepping into the schoolyard and glancing back only once before disappearing among the throng of students.
As Jackie slid into the plush leather seats of his Duesenberg, the engine purred to life followed by his bodyguard's car from behind.
Inside the school, Marc entered the bustling hallway, the air thick with chatter and laughter.
He glanced around, feeling the excitement and nervousness as students rushed past him.
As he took a deep breath, he spotted a boy leaning against the lockers, an easy smile on his face.
"Hey!" the boy called out, straightening up. "You must be new here."
"Yeah, I'm Marc," he replied, taking a step closer. "What's your name?"
"Jim Bourbon." The boy grinned, extending his hand. "Nice to meet you, Marc. So, what do you think of our lovely school?"
Marc shook Jim's hand, noticing the firmness in his grip. "It's okay so far. A bit... big. I mean, I've only just started. What about you?"
