As night fell, the bus dimmed its lights, casting a warm glow throughout the interior. The rhythmic rumble of the engine combined with the swaying motion lulled many of the students into a peaceful slumber. Kai sat stiffly in his seat, feeling the weight of Amara’s head resting heavily on his shoulder.
He glanced over at Zyran, who was engaged in a quiet conversation with Yuu across the aisle. Zyran’s smile was infectious, and Kai felt a strange mix of annoyance and longing. He wished he could be sitting there instead of being a makeshift pillow for Amara.
With a resigned sigh, Kai decided he couldn’t take it anymore. He pulled out his phone and texted Yuu discreetly: Can you switch seats with Amara? I need to sit next to Zyran.
A few moments later, Yuu’s eyes lit up as she read the message. She looked back and gave him a knowing smile before nodding in agreement.
“Hey, Amara!” Yuu said, her voice a little too loud for the quiet bus. “You should switch seats with me. I want to talk to Kai about the project!”
Amara stirred slightly, blinking her eyes open. “Huh? What?”
“Come on, it’ll be fun! I promise I’ll let you take my seat after,” Yuu encouraged, nudging her gently.
Amara, still half-asleep, groaned but finally sat up and rubbed her eyes. “Fine, whatever. Just don’t make it weird, okay?”
As she shifted over, Kai seized the opportunity and quickly slid into the now-empty seat next to Zyran. His heart raced as he settled in, the space between them feeling charged with a mix of excitement and lingering tension.“Hey,” Zyran said, a little surprised but pleased. “You finally made it over.”
“Yeah, well, I couldn’t take it anymore,” Kai replied, trying to sound casual. “Amara was using me as a pillow.”
Zyran chuckled softly. “Guess you’ve got your work cut out for you with her.”
Tell me about it,” Kai said, glancing over at Amara, who had quickly closed her eyes again, looking comfortable in her new seat next to Yuu. “But I’d much rather be here with you.”
Zyran’s eyes widened slightly, and a faint blush crept up his cheeks. “Really? You mean that?”
“Of course,” Kai said, his voice a bit firmer now. “I mean, we’re working on a project together. Might as well get comfortable, right?”
The bus continued its journey through the night, and the chatter faded as most of the students succumbed to sleep. The quiet allowed for a rare moment of intimacy between Kai and Zyran.
“So, what do you think of the project so far?” Zyran asked, leaning a bit closer, his curiosity evident.
“I think it’s going well, but I really want to make sure we stand out,” Kai replied, suddenly feeling more at ease. “I know you have some great ideas.”
Zyran’s smile widened, and for a moment, it felt like the animosity between them melted away. They shared their thoughts, exchanging ideas and laughter as the night wore on, their connection deepening in ways neither had anticipated.
As the bus rumbled on through the night, Kai couldn’t help but feel that this trip might change everything.
(Things about to get spicy ,l'm joking 🗿)
