The Young Drunk

I have been drinking for as long as I can remember. I grew up in the hills back in the time our grandparents would give us whiskey for medicine. It would cure a toothache, sterilize a cut, and a shot mixed with honey and lemon would fight whatever sickness that you could come up with.

We came up with a lot.

The first time I got black-out drunk was around the age of 13. My brother had a bottle of wine that he didn't like, and he gave it to me. After my mom went to bed I snuck outside the house and drank the whole bottle. Then I busted it in the street, and passed out next to it.

However long later I woke up, scraped the glass into the ditch to protect peoples tires, and stumbled back inside.

This is the pattern that I would repeat over and over for the next 40 years.

As of right now I have been sober for almost two years. I am optimistic, but I have been sober for this long before, and it didn't take.

One day at a time.
