I first met Dee at the end of eighth grade. He was a couple of years older than me, and had just moved to Sherwood Forest from Kansas City.
Dee was one of the only kids I knew that lived with both of his parents. His father was a decon at the church down the street. When he first met me he gave me a Good News Bible that I still have to this day.
Dee was a good looking kid, and popular. He had a skinny tall bad boy Tom Cruise thing going for him. Every girl I knew had a thing for him at one time or another.
So me and Rick didn't like him right out of the gate. Whenever he tried to talk to us we would blow him off. We nicknamed him "Sailor Sandy" for some reason.
Around this time I was giving skateboarding a try. Never really cared for it. I'm a rock climber, and I need something solid under my feet. I don't like diving boards either.
One day I was skating and passed Dee on the street. He tried to talk to me, but I ignored him and kept going. I was distracted by this, and wasn't paying attention to where I was going.
I hit a speed bump, and crashed.
Dee came running to help.
We were friends after that.
