Doc and Marty had finally gotten away from Kid Tannen. They had crash landed near the De Lorean about to leave 1931.
Marty asked, "So, what do we do now?"
Doc got the De Lorean open, "Now we get back to 1986 before Annie gets too worried. And before our interactions with the past inevitably cascade into a calamitous future!"
Marty replied, "You had me at 'get back to 1986 before Annie gets too worried'."
Doc asked, "Where'd you leave Einstein?"
Marty knelt over and started to say, "Uh Doc...?"
Doc didn't get his friend's distress and replied, "He's not in the pound, is he?"
Marty looked at his hand as it started to fade out of existence. He admitted, "No, I think we have a bigger problem..."
That's when Doc finally noticed that Marty was starting to fade out.
He stated, "Great Scott!"
Marty groaned, "I promised Annie that I wouldn't... Doc, what's happening?"
Doc questioned, "I don't know... Unless... Do you still have tomorrow's newspaper?"
Marty answered, "Yeah!" Marty brought out the paper and read, "'Local accountant beaten, left for dead.'"
Doc took the paper now and read the rest aloud, "Local accountant Arthur McFly was severely beaten and left for dead on the steps of the Hill Valley courthouse last night..."
Marty blurted out, "They're going to kill my grandpa?!"
Doc replied, "Tannen's goons, no doubt. Probably in retaliation for Arthur answering that subpoena you delivered."
The youngest McFly questioned, "What are we going to do?"
The scientist answered, "I'm not sure what we can do. According to this, your grandfather was dumped on the doorsteps of the courthouse five minutes ago!"
Marty had his father's picture out and confirmed, "My dad's picture is disappearing!"
Doc explained, "That's the timestream catching up with your grandfather's fatal wounds. He'll never be born and neither will Dave, Linda, and you. Just like in 1955. Oh, Annie is going to kill us..."
Marty sadly quipped, "Well, at least she's still a Baines right now..."
Doc perked up. He knew that Marty loved Annie, there was no surprise there. But his friend just told him that he wanted to... That's when they both eyed the De Lorean. They knew what they had to do. Doc went over to it, starting it.
Doc questioned, "When was the last time you saw your grandfather?"
Marty answered, "Four o'clock, in the town square."
Doc put the time coordinates in, "Let's give him enough time to give his deposition."
Marty agreed, "Right."
Doc warned, "We'll have to be careful not to run into our other selves."
Marty pointed out, a bit jokingly, "Easy for you, you were in jail most of the time."
Marty refueled the De Lorean when he said that. Doc smiled a bit.
Doc started to say, "All right, let's get moving before the police find us..."
"Freeze!"
Doc perked up, "Aah!"
Marty hid himself quickly, not believing his luck. There, in front of Doc, was an officer. Officer Baines - Annie's grandfather. Marty had nearly forgotten that her grandfather was an officer back in the day. He was the one that busted Kid Tannen.
Officer Baines was pointing his gun at Doc, "Step out of the car with your hands up!"
Doc did as he was told and exited the car, the door still open.
Marty whispered, "That's right Doc, keep him off balance."
Officer Baines perked up, "What was that?"
Doc acted dumb, "What was what?"
Marty whispered, "Crap!"
Officer Baines declared, "I thought I heard something back there."
Doc shook his head, "I think you are mistaken, officer."
Officer Baines pushed Doc back further. Marty went to hide near the passenger side.
Officer Baines perked up, "Well, look at what I got here. Looks like I caught me a fugitive! Carl Sagan, the speakeasy arsonist."
Doc clarified, "Alleged speakeasy arsonist, if you please."
Marty went to the front of the De Lorean now. Doc threw the keys behind him. They were now on the ground, behind it.
Officer Baines asked, "What kind of buggy is that?"
Doc told him, "Stay back! It's a prototype, still untested. Liable to blow up at any moment. Or suddenly take off without warning!"
Officer Baines perked up, thinking he heard something. Doc pointed out that it could be the night air. Officer Baines pushed Doc around the passenger side of the De Lorean. Officer Baines kept asking questions about the De Lorean. Marty grabbed the keys quickly as the officer pushed Doc to the front this time. Marty quickly got into the driver's seat, taking out the keys, and starting the De Lorean. He drove off as Officer Baines went after him. He turned, realizing that Doc was left behind.
Marty cried out, "Doc!"
Doc commented, "Go! Save your grandfather! I'll be fine until you get back!"
Marty replied, "You got it, Doc!"
With that, the youngest McFly went back in time.
Officer Baines was in shock, "What in the world was that...?"
...
When Marty came back, it was four fifty-five in the afternoon. Marty knew that Arthur was in the courthouse somewhere, he just didn't know where. Marty looked in a window and saw Arthur.
He breathed, "There he is! All I gotta do is get to him before..."
As he cut through the town square, he heard a voice.
"Mr. Corleone!" It was Edna, taking out her notes. "I was wondering if I could do a little follow up interview with you about the plight of poor Mr. Sagan. My sources indicate that Judge Brown'll be setting him free tomorrow."
Marty whispered, "I wouldn't bet on that..."
Edna perked up, "What was that?"
Marty responded, "Nothing. Listen, can we talk later? I've really got to get to the courthouse right now."
Edna asked, "Really? Why?"
Marty answered, "My grandpa needs me as a character witness for a uh fishing license."
Edna stated, "Oh, then carry on. And do put that vicious dog of yours on a leash, will you? We have laws about that sort of thing, you know?"
Just as Marty was about to get to the courthouse, he saw Emmett, the other Marty, and Einstein on the steps. Marty started to fade out a bit again. Einstein saw him and went to him. Einstein got him a stick, expecting Marty to play. Marty took the stick, seeing Edna. Marty threw it and Einstein went over to her to get the stick.
She groaned, "You!" Einstein jumped her, "AAYYEE! Get this mangy animal away from me!"
Einstein was barking at her and the other Marty got him off. Marty went towards the courthouse. That's when he noticed one of Tannen's goons. Oh, that wasn't good.
