Sophie's POV

I felt my eyes widen as I entered the mansion. This one room was larger than the entire mansion on the outside. It was decorated like a hunting lodge. In the centre of the room, there was a massive reptile carpet. On the right wall, there was a bedroom size hearth with a massive fire inside. Columns made of roughly hewn tree trunks held up rafters constructed from spears and shields lined the walls. In the centre of this room, there stood a freestanding display board which announced:

TODAY'S ACTIVITIES:
D&D TO THE DEATH! - COPENHAGEN ROOM, 9 AM

SINGLE COMBAT TO THE DEATH! - OSLO ROOM, 10 AM

BUFFET LUNCH TO THE DEATH! - DINING HALL, 12 PM

BOOK CLUB TO THE DEATH! - TRONDHEIM ROOM, 1 PM

DUOLINGO CLUB TO THE DEATH - ÅLESUND ROOM, 3 PM

The middle-aged viking guy, Hunding, asked me something, but I was so deep in thought over the sign that I had to ask him to repeat it. "Luggage," he grunted. "Do you have any?"
"Uhh," I checked myself. "No."
He groaned. "Why does nobody bring luggage anymore? Do you not get anything put on the funeral pyre?"
"We don't tend to burn people with items anymore." I told him.
He seemed genuinely surprised when I told him this.
"You don't?" Hunding exclaimed. "Anyway, let's not keep Helgi waiting. I don't want him to use the stick." He started strolling towards the far corner, where an upturned boat's keel was being used as the reception. Behind it stood man whose beard was massive and unkempt while his hair looked like a bird's nest. He was wearing a forest green pinstriped suit, and his name tag read:

HELGI, MANAGER, EAST GOTHLAND, VALUED TEAM MEMBER SINCE 749 C.E.

"Welcome!" Helgi looked up from the computer. "Checking in?"
"Umm-"
"You know that check-in time is 3 PM or later," he stated, as if this was a common piece of information, "If you die earlier than that, we can't guarantee that your room will be ready."
"If you want me to come back later, I can go back to being alive until then," I offered.
"Nonsense!" He looked back down to his computer and grinned, revealing three surprisingly white teeth. "Looks like we have an available room. You've been upgraded to a suite."
"All we have are suites," Hunding grumbled under his breath.
"Hunding, what have I told you about saying that?" Helgi warned him. "You don't want me to get the stick, do you?".
Hunding flinched. "No, thank you."
Helgi turned to me, "How many keys would you like? Is one enough?"
"Umm, I think so?" I told him.
"Good, good. Now Hunding, take her up to her room now." Helgi ordered.

"Excuse me?" I asked, and both men turned to me. "Have both of you been here since the year 749? That's a really long time ago."
"Don't remind me." Hunding grumbled. "And you said I'm dead? I don't feel dead, I feel like I did this morning."

"Miss, all this will be explained at dinner tonight. That's when guests are formally welcomed. Now, let Hunding take you to your room."
"One more thing," I said. "What does that stand for?" Pointing at the interlocking H and V on both Helgi's and Hunding's clothes. It was clear I was starting to get on his nerves. "That, Miss, stands for 'Hotel Valhalla'."
"So what you're saying is that Valhalla actually exists?"
"Yes, now no more questions!" Helgi told me. "Here's your room key," he gave me a stone with a single Norse rune on it. "Do you want the minibar key?"
"Do I?" I asked.
"Yes, she wants the minibar key." Hunding jumped in. "You want the minibar key, trust me. You're gonna be here a while."
"How long?" I asked, slightly fearing the answer.
"Forever, or at least until Ragnarök." Helgi answered. "Hunding will now finally escort you to your room. Have a nice afterlife." With that, Helgi turned back to his computer, and Hunding started to take me to a doorway at the back of the room

Longest chapter yet! 🥳

Sorry that I'm late. This one took me a while.

I know that so far, it looks extremely similar to what Magnus said and did, but that is mostly what I imagine what Sophie would do as well.

I'll try to get the next one out soon.

Bye 👋
