The familiar buzz of her family's voices filled the room—her mom and dad discussing plans for the day, Aidan cracking jokes with Jack, and Sienna talking about some last-minute press event she had to attend. Despite all the noise around her, Aurelie couldn't wipe the smile off her face.
"Earth to Aurelie," Sienna teased, nudging her. "What's got you grinning like that?"
Aurelie quickly glanced up from her phone, slightly caught off guard. "Oh, nothing," she replied, trying to brush it off, but the small smirk she was trying to hide only grew wider.
Aidan raised an eyebrow from across the table. "Uh-huh, sure. You've been on that phone all morning," he said, leaning forward. "Who's texting you?"
Before Aurelie could respond, her mom, Jackie, jumped in. "It's Walker, isn't it?" She said it with a knowing look, her tone teasing but gentle.
Aurelie's face warmed as everyone's attention turned toward her. "Maybe," she mumbled, her eyes falling back to her phone, where a new message from Walker appeared. He'd sent her a meme, one of the inside jokes they used to share when they were best friends.
Jack leaned over from his chair, glancing at her screen. "Definitely Walker," he teased with a grin.
Sienna grinned at her twin. "You two have been messaging a lot lately," she observed, her voice soft but playful. "What's going on?"
Aurelie hesitated for a moment, her thumb pausing over the keyboard as she looked up at her family. "It's... it's nothing serious," she started, realizing how much they were all waiting for her to explain. "We've just been talking again, like before."
Her dad, who had been silent until now, chimed in with a chuckle. "Talking, huh? That smile doesn't say 'just talking.'"
Aurelie couldn't help but laugh softly. "Okay, fine. We've been messaging a lot, and it's... nice. It's starting to feel like how it was when we were just friends, you know? Before everything got complicated."
Jackie smiled knowingly. "That's good, honey. Sometimes, going back to being friends is the best place to start."
Aidan leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms with a smirk. "You're not over him, are you?"
Aurelie's cheeks flushed, and she bit her lip. She hadn't fully admitted it out loud to herself yet, but hearing Aidan say it made her realize the truth. "No," she whispered. "I don't think I ever was."
