Evie's pov
I took a deep breath and pushed the memory of Adrien's gaze out of my mind.
Instinct.
That’s all it was, and I needed to remind myself of that as I stared at the reports spread out on my desk. I had work to do—important work—and I wasn’t about to let a moment of weakness derail me.As I began typing, my fingers flew over the keyboard, the click-clack of keys providing a steady rhythm to drown out my thoughts.
I forced myself to focus on the data, the strategies, and the upcoming campaigns. I had been given a lot to catch up on, and diving into it felt like a welcome distraction. With each passing hour, I felt the tension in my shoulders begin to ease, even if only a little.
Stay focused, I reminded myself.
I had a job to do, and it didn’t involve getting wrapped up in any complicated feelings about my boss.I could almost feel the resolve hardening within me. I wouldn’t let Adrien Lacroix get under my skin. I wouldn’t let myself linger on his piercing blue eyes or the way he’d held me in the elevator—no, I would be professional.
He was my boss, and this was just a job.As the office began to empty around me, I glanced at the clock. It was well past six, and I was still at my desk, surrounded by the dim glow of my computer screen. Most people had left for the day, but I was determined to finish the reports before I called it a night.
Just as I settled back into my work, my phone buzzed on the desk. I glanced at the screen to see Liam's name lighting up.
“Hey, Evie! Still at the office?” he asked, his voice warm and familiar.
“Yeah, just trying to get a few things wrapped up,” I replied, forcing a cheerful tone into my voice.
“Want me to come pick you up? You shouldn’t be working this late by yourself,” he said, concern threading through his words.
I hesitated, wanting to say no and insist I could handle it. But the idea of leaving the office alone, knowing Adrien was still around, made my stomach twist.
“Sure, that would be great. Thanks, Liam.”
“Okay, I’ll be there in a bit,” he said before hanging up.
I set my phone down, the warmth of our conversation lingering. Liam was a breath of fresh air, a reminder of why I was doing all this—my family, my life outside of this corporate world.I worked diligently until I saw the familiar face of Liam appear in the doorway. He smiled, his eyes lighting up as he caught sight of me.
“Look at you, all dedicated. You’ve been here all day!”
“Just trying to get settled in,” I replied with a smile, pushing away the lingering thoughts of Adrien.
Liam stepped closer, glancing at the papers strewn across my desk. “You know, you can’t burn yourself out on the first week. They need you at your best, not your most exhausted.”
I nodded, grateful for his concern. “I know, but I want to make a good impression. Besides, it’s quiet here, and I can focus.”
“Still, let’s get you out of here. You’ve earned a break,” he said, extending his hand toward me.I took it, allowing him to pull me up from my chair. Together, we walked out of the office, the fluorescent lights flickering off as we left.As we made our way down the hall, I felt the weight of the day begin to lift.
I was leaving behind the stress, the tension, and the confusion surrounding my feelings for Adrien. For now, it was just me and Liam, and I was determined to enjoy the simplicity of the moment.
