Adrien's pov
Evie crossed her arms, clearly trying to put some distance between us.
“What?” she asked, her voice laced with frustration, but I could see the tension in her stance, the way she was holding herself back.
I stepped closer, closing the space between us.
“Let me help,” I insisted, my eyes scanning her face for any sign of cooperation.
She turned to face me fully, her hazel eyes narrowing slightly.
“I’m fine, Adrien,” she said, her tone firm but not unkind. “I don’t need your help.”
Her words hit harder than I expected, striking at something deeper than the surface. Fine. She wanted to handle this alone. But something in me wouldn’t let it go, not this time. When she moved to leave, I reached out and caught her hand, my grip gentle but unyielding.
“Just let me help,” I said, quieter now.
“I can take care of myself,” she shot back, her voice a little sharper.
“Clearly,” I replied, my tone softer but insistent. “Just let me help... please?”
Her eyes softened for a moment, and she looked like she wanted to argue, to keep the walls between us intact. But instead, she sighed, resigned, and slowly turned her back to me. With a deliberate movement, she slipped off her jacket, revealing the mark on the upper part of her back, near her shoulder.
The sight made me wince. The skin was bruised, a deep purplish-red splotch against her pale skin. It stretched from just below her shoulder blade, the edges fading into lighter shades of blue. Whatever had caused it, it wasn’t minor.
“What happened?” I asked, my voice low as I instinctively moved closer.
She hesitated before muttering, “I... I fell.”
I exhaled, frustration and concern mixing as I went to my drawer. I retrieved the ointment and returned to her side, kneeling slightly to get a better angle.
“This might sting,” I murmured, squeezing the ointment onto my fingers.
Her body tensed as I gently applied it to the mark, her skin flinching under my touch.
“Relax,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. I wasn’t sure if I was telling her or myself.
After a few moments, I was done. She moved quickly, shrugging her jacket back on, not once meeting my gaze.
“Thank you,” she muttered under her breath, her voice so soft I almost missed it.
Before I could respond, she was out of the room, her movements hurried. But I noticed it—her ears, bright red with embarrassment as she practically fled.
I smirked to myself, watching the door close behind her.
