Annabelle spent the next ten minutes scolding Ashley for her "foul language" as she put it then profusely apologizing to my about her behavior all the while I stood there dumbfounded.
I couldn't really blame the girl because it was hard to run when you got comfortable some place but she also couldn't blame me because I still had no idea what was going on and why I had to start running in the first place. Annabelle knows, she's made that clear, so now I'm on a mission to find out.
"It's alright." I said while walking inside this huge home with Annabelle. "Wow, this is beautiful, is it yours?" I asked while looking over at Annabelle who was taking George from Ashley.
"Kind of." She said then moved to the kitchen. "Who's hungry?" she asked.
I knew what she was doing.
Mom was the master of changing the subject.
I'm not having it today.
"Annabelle. Where did the house come from?" I asked while walking up to her.
"Obviously someone built it." Ashley chimed in while leaning against the kitchen doorway.
I took George from Annabelle then gave him back to Ashley. "Listen, kid.." I started and crossed my arms. "I understand that you're going through this "I hate everyone" phase and especially me but we have grown up things to discuss. So would you please-" I started while grabbing her shoulders and turning her around in the opposite direction. "get lost." I finished then gave her a slight shove before turning back to Annabelle who had a smirk on her face.
"Boy, when you two finally get along you'll be the best of friends." She said laughing then stopped upon noticing my not so amused face. "Okay fine, but I'm not telling you everything tonight. I promise soon but we need to be somewhere safe first. This house is only temporary." She said then took a deep breath before beginning. "We have people helping us Tia." She stated.
"People?" I asked while sliding a barstool out from under the island then sat on it.
"Yes. This...thing, that happened concerns a lot more people that just you." She said while getting a wine glass out from the cabinet.
"So we're not the only one running?" I asked starting to feel relieved.
"No. We are." She said while pouring some wine in her glass. "But the consequences of you being found can have a horrible effect on everyone. When we first left it was just you, me, dad and mom by ourselves but then slowly word got out and we started getting help. It was just money in envelopes on our door step to begin with but then it was followed by people helping us leave cities, providing new identities, new houses," she said while motioning with her arms to the house we were in "and new cars. It's huge now Tia. A lot of people have the motive of protecting themselves but over the years it really became mainly about protecting you." She said while taking a drink from her glass.
"Protecting me from what?" I asked.
"I can't tell you." She said quietly.
"Dammit Annabelle!" I yelled while screeching my chair back and standing up. "This involves me I deserve to know!"
"Tia you can't know yet, it isn't the right time. There's things you need to learn before you learn about why we left. I can't just tell you Tia! Most of these things need some easing into, you need time to process them and research. You know, we don't just put kids in the pool expecting them to swim right away. They need time first." She said getting just as angry before taking a deep breath to calm down. "I want to tell you Tia, but you need to find some other things out about this family before you know what's actually going on." She finished.
"Fine whatever." I mumbled while slamming the chair back where it was and walking out of the kitchen.
"Tia!" Annabelle called after me.
"I'm going to bed." I said not even looking back at her then walked up the stairs. I didn't exactly know where I was going considering I've never been in this house before but I needed time to myself.
After finally finding a room in this gigantic house and changing into the pajamas that were in the closet I laid down in the bed and fell asleep.
Or at least I tried too.
During the night I awoke to howling that seemed it was coming from only a few miles away. "I didn't know we had wolves here." I mumbled sleepily while getting up and walking over to the large window that was in the room. I don't know when I went back to sleep but when I woke back up I was in the chair by the window with a huge pain in my neck and drool running down my cheek.
Lovely.
"No wonder why you don't have a boyfriend, I feel nauseous just looking at you." I heard Ashley sneer which caused me to whip my head over in her direction.
"Shit, ouch!" I yelled causing Ashley to laugh while I scrambled out of the chair and to the door.
"Is this a daily thing with you because it may be the only thing I like about you." She said continuing to laugh.
"Go away brat." I mumbled while walking over to the door and slamming it in her face.
"Rude!" she yelled from the other side. "Mom sent me to tell you that she made breakfast. Come eat." She said sounding annoyed. "Or don't. I don't really care.
After showering and putting on some clothes I found in the closet I headed downstairs to eat, no matter if I was still mad at my sister I was pretty hungry.
"Good morning." Annabelle said while putting a spoonful of mush into little George's mouth. "Did you sleep okay? I see you found your room and clothes just fine." She said offering me a small smile.
"Yeah." I grumbled still feeling tired. "Did you know that we have wolves out here?" I asked while turning my back to get some coffee. "I heard them last night just howling away." I said then laughed a bit. "Hey, do you think it's possible for wolves to be sad? Because there was some howls coming out of the one, let me tell you it almost sounded more depressed than I get." I said laughing a bit more which stopped when I turned back to see Annabelle giving Ashley a hard stare while shaking her head "no". "What? Did I say something?" I asked looking at Ashley who seemed a little concerned.
"Nothing....uh..they just frightened Ashley a little last night, right dear?" she asked while beginning to feed George again.
"Um, yeah." Ashley said quickly while beginning to shove food in her mouth.
The rest of the day went on like normal. I ate some food, played with George while Annabelle went out shopping with Ashley, Ashley continued to give me attitude which I've already grown to ignore, and then we all went to sleep. Everything seemed pretty much normal until I awoke to someone shaking my body.
"Wake up!" somebody whispered harshly into my ear while violently shaking me.
"Ashley." I mumbled and rubbed my eyes. "What are you doing? If you came in here to pull some weird 'Orphan' movie shit let me just tell you—" I stopped when noticing tears in her eyes. "Ashley, what's wrong? And why do you have George?" I asked feeling wide awake now and sat up and looking around the room.
Ashley wouldn't say anything for a few moments, she just had this look on her face like she was about to die or something and I didn't understand why until I heard the next words that left her mouth.
"They're here." She said quietly. "And I think they took my mom."
