"Excuse me?" I asked while looking over at Ashley.
"You heard me." She said with nothing but disgust in her voice. "I'm going for a walk." She said while thrusting a sleeping George in my arms before getting out and slamming the door.
"Ashley!" I yelled while managing to get out as fast as I could without disturbing the sleeping baby in my arms. "Ashley come back here!" I yelled quietly, trying not to wake George or anyone else around us up.
But she didn't stop. Ashley kept on walking to God knows where and here I was with a baby in my arms and me only wearing a robe. This must have been quite the sight.
"You have no right to speak to me this way." I said while speed walking up to her and grabbing her arm, spinning her around so she was facing me.
"I have every right!" She yelled back in my face while trying to get away. "Let go of me!"
"No!" I screamed loud causing George to start whimpering. "You have been treating me like shit since you met me! I understand that this is not the life you would have picked to live, but has it ever crossed your self centered mind that I wouldn't have picked this either?!" I said while letting go of her arm and adjusted a now crying George in my arms. "Do you think that I want to be running from town to town changing my name and hair color more than I change my own clothes?! Do you think that I would have liked to live in the same house growing up or had best friends that I've known for ages or even having to deal with mean teachers in high school?! I would have loved that Ashley." I said beginning to tear up. "I would have loved having my mom and dad wake me up in the mornings for school, I would have loved fighting with Annabelle over ridiculous things, I would have loved to hang out with friends on the weekends, and I would have loved to be able to have been there when you and George came into Annabelles life." I finished then quickly wiped my tears. "But I didn't because something that I don't know about happened and no one is telling me anything. I am just as exhausted and mad and frustrated and..." I trailed off trying to find the words "sad as you are. But you can only see your own problems." I finished then finally started to sob.
We stood there with me sobbing while holding on the George who was calming down and Ashley standing there just staring at me in disbelief.
"You go for your walk, but come back in five minutes because then we need to leave." I said clearing my throat and wiping my eyes for the last time. Turning around on my heel I headed back to the car the got in while gently closing the door."You're a lucky baby." I mumbled looking down at George who was staring up at me. "Hopefully by the time you are three or four this will all be over and you won't have any memory of it." I said while bouncing him a little on my lap, which earned some giggles out of him.
As I was about to say more there was a knock at the passenger window, it was Ashley. Hitting the unlock button she quickly got in and locked the doors from her side and there we sat in silence for a while.
"I'm sorry." She said quietly but sincerely while looking down at her lap.
"Thank you." I said just as quietly while looking ahead. Deciding not to press the issue anymore I handed George back to her and started the car. "Before we leave we have to stop at a store and get some food." I said while pulling out of the spot we were parked at. "And some clothes. I feel naked in the robe." I said then smiled when I heard a snort come from Ashley.
"There's a baby bag in the trunk for George along with some cash that's been stored away so we should be good on both for at least a year. Mom figured that if it got to the point of us running they'd be looking for us in the baby aisle." She said while cradling George in her arms.
"She had this all planned out huh?" I pondered to myself.
"We were at the house a week before she got you." Ashley blurted out causing me to glance at her before looking back at the road. "She knew that was our next stop so she brought me there to walk the tunnels. At the time we didn't know you were going to be with us so at that point it wasn't urgent to memorize the tunnels." She said while looking down at her brother. "We didn't run as much as you, maybe ten times a year but it was enough to keep us cautious." She said while pulling her bottom lip into her mouth. "The first day we were there when you were up in your room she took through the tunnels again. I knew at that point it was important to remember where I was going."
"That night they came she.." She trailed off as if she was trying to think of how to word it. "She came into my room with George in her arms and told me they were coming." She continued."But how did she know?" I asked.
Ashley either didn't hear me or chose to ignore me and kept on with her story."I thought that maybe she was going to have me wait in the car while she got you but when I looked in her eyes...I knew it was too late." She said while taking a deep breath. "She shoved me in the tunnel that was located in my room and told me to get you then get as far away as we possibly could." She finished then relaxed in her seat.
"I'm sorry you had to go through that." I said while pulling into the parking lot of a store. "It's hard to lose a parent but we'll be okay." I said confidently while nodding. "I'll make sure nothing happens to you guys." I finished while turning the car off.
"Now we need to be quick about this, they've gotten extremely close lately. They could be a hundred miles away or five minutes away. Grab what you think you need and then come find me okay?" I said sternly while looking over at Ashley who just nodded.
After grabbing the wad of cash from the trunk we both made our way inside, me trying to keep my robe closed and Ashley holding George in her arms. "I'll take him, I don't want you being held down if you need to run." I said quickly while putting my hands under the baby's armpits and lifted him up. As soon as we walked through the doors we both parted ways, her going to the food side and me making my way to the clothing and shoe side.
I found an empty cart and started piling clothes into it; some for me, some for Ashley, and some for little George and also a pair of sneakers so I don't have to walk barefoot everywhere. As I made my way up to the front and saw Ashley I started to wave to get her attention which was only met with a look of horror and her shaking her head 'no' very slightly, but I knew it was there.
I took that as my chance to leave the cart and go find a place to lay low in the fitting rooms until she came to find me."Katia?" I heard someone whisper and I knew it was Ashley.
"In here." I said opening the door to let her in. "What's going on?" I asked then glanced down at her bags, feeling relieved that she bought my things too.
"We have a huge problem, come with me but stay low." She said then grabbed my hand while leading us out of the fitting rooms. "Look." She said then pointed to one of the TVs that were near the fitting rooms for kids to watch while they waited. What I saw on that screen next made my heart fall into my stomach.
In big bold letter read 'AMBER ALERT: 8 MONTH OLD GEORGE RUEBEN IS MISSING' running along the bottom of the screen while George's picture was centered in the middle of the screen.
"You've got to be kidding me." I spat while looking at Ashley who had the same lost expression on her face.
"Did mom get away and think they took George? I don't get it, how does she not know that he is safe?" She asked while glancing at the screen.
"Ashley, Annabelle didn't do this, she's smart. If she needed to get in contact she would. This was them. They knew we have the baby and we'd be easier to spot if there was an alert out for him." I said running my fingers through my hair.
"How do we get out? All the employees are talking about it. One even suspected you because he saw you walk in. What do we do?" She asked with desperation in her voice.
"I...I have no idea." I saw while shrinking down to the floor to avoid being spotted. "But whatever we do, it won't go unnoticed."
