“Mom! Do you want more ice cream?” I called to her from the kitchen as she sat down on the couch with the popcorn bowl in her hands. We did this every Monday night, kind of like a ‘Yay we got through today’ celebration since Mondays were always hard but with this little tradition we had always made my weeks better.
“No Tia I’m supposed to be on a diet!” she said stuffing some popcorn in her mouth and I laughed.
“Well its strawberry ice cream, it has the fruit flavor so how bad could it be for you?” I asked popping my head through the doorway.
She had a huge smile spread across her face and she pointed at me. “I raised such a brilliant daughter.” she teased causing me to laugh some more.
I wasn’t stupid and she wasn’t either, we knew it wasn’t healthy for her but lately with everything going on she hasn’t been eating and lost a lot of weight. Truth be told, she needed these Monday celebrations more than I did but I was happy to comply.
“Is dad going to make it home in time or is he still at his meeting?” I asked while walking in the room with the bowls of ice cream in my hands and sat down next to her.
“He’ll be a couple more hours, but the way I look at it is that we finally have settled down and he’s moving up the chain. This will be good for us.” She said patting my leg while switching on the TV to the movie channel.
“I know.” I said pulling the blankets over us. “So what do you think it will be this time? A murder movie, sappy, or romantic?” I asked looking over at my mom.
“Well since last time was romantic I think it will be a—“ she started.
BANG!
We both screamed out and she threw her arms over me, pulling me closer to her as if to protect me from whatever happened next. We both snapped our heads over to the door where the noise came from and saw the beginning of a blade coming through the door and in a blink of an eye it was gone.
“Mom, what was—“
BANG
And now it was back again. With her arms still around me my mom pulled me up from the couch letting the popcorn and the ice cream fall to the ground.
“They found us Tia, we have to go.” She said grabbing my wrist as she pulled me to the basement door.
“What about dad?” I yelled over the noise as the banging continued to become more frequent.
“We’ll get him, don’t worry.” She said pulling open the door, shoving me down the stairs first before grabbing the lock we kept on the inside of the basement room. With shaky hands my mom quickly turned the lock on the door knob then moved the latch over that we had installed when we first moved in, then put the lock into the hole and closed it. “Come on Tia, theres no time to waste.” She said putting a hand on my back and pushed me down the stairs.
Everything happened so quickly, it seems like two minutes ago we were sitting up in the living room ready to watch a movie and know we were running through a secret tunnel that was built in the house years ago. When we finally made it out, which was across the street in the neighbor’s yard, we moved the numerous piled a wood they kept in their back yard and pulled out our duffel bags we had hidden. In every place we have lived we always kept the things that would reveal our true identities away, the farthest away from us.
We ran through various neighbors backyards and alley ways until we finally reached downtown, although it was still busy we knew that we were not safe hidden in plain sight and had to get somewhere to hide and quickly.
